Products and Order of Application

Okay - I'm new so please bare with me.

I apply everything with a Porter Cable Random Orbit and have purchase the polishing pad system through Autopia. My final wax is Zaino.

All this being said, I recently applied 1Z Metallic Polish with the blue pad to my 2003 Jeep and was very pleased with the results. However, I think it can be better. I also have a 2002 Subaru Outback LL Bean (the wife's) which, under florescent lights, shows tiny (what I think are ) oxidation spots/dots all over the hood. This prompted me to purchase the following three products:

P21S Paintwork Cleanser

Meguiar's Medallion Premium Paint Cleaner

1Z Paint Polish

My questions are these:

(1) Is there an order to apply these three products that will give me that ultimate "wet" look?

(2) Are the three products I recently purchased the same thing (did I buy three products that do essentially the same thing)?

(3) Can they all be applied using the Porter Cable (as opposed to hand)? For those familiar wit the foam padsâ€Â¦aggressive cutting or the fine pad?

Obviously I'm new to the "serious" detailing process so I greatly appreciate any information you all can provide and expertise offer.

Welcome to Autopia!

I'd give the vehicles a good claying (or preferably, use a decontamination system like ABC and clay during the "B" step). The clay is very important and might take the spots off the Subie all by itself. Seriously, get some clay and do that as the first step.

I dunno how compatible some of your products will be with the Zaino unless you use an alcohol spray or something to remove the waxes (1Z stuff contains wax) and fillers (p21S GEPC contains fillers).

Not familiar with the Medallion, sorry.

But anyhow, the 1Z PP followed by the 1Z MP oughta make *anything* look great. Use the PP over and over until you get the spots/marring out (or you decide "good enough" and give up :D ). No need to use the P21S stuff IMO if you already have the 1z MP (which I like a lot better).

Use the PP with a cutting pad for the worst marring/spots/etc. Then use it with a polishing pad (fairly mild one). Things should look about as good as they're gonna get before you quit using the PP. Use the MP with a mild polishing pad or even a finishing pad.

Heh heh, you might like the look of the MP so much that you won't bother with the Zaino ;) MP will give a month or so of protection all by itself.

Hey thanks for the input. The reason I bought the P21S is because Dave's write-ups favor that product. But, like I said, I may have purchase three of the same products. Guess I'll just have to experiment with layering to see which gives me the best result.

As far as claying, I've done this already but didn't give me the result I was looking for. I'm a huge fan of claying if only for the feel you get afterward. It's funny, my father-in-law was recently in town and I was going through the claying process. I gave him a bar and bottle of detailing spray of his own to work along side of me. He lasted about five minutes before expressing his dislike of the process and quit. He just didn't get it nor was he going about the process correctly. Old timers...

I use that p21s cleaner then Zaino for many of my details and they work very well together. Machine the p21s on the wipe with MF is all I do with good results. I used to use p21s by hand then Zaino with very good results but recently changed to machine, either will work. If you wipe off with alcohol you will be wiping off some of the p21s that is hiding imperfections and is in little crevices. Clay, Polish, Cleanser, then Zaino by hand will give you my prefered results. However, I finish my Zaino with a wax topper the next day for an even wetter look, I like p21s wax or Natty's. Not many people apply Zaino or a topper by machine but of course you can. Many people speculate about Zaino bonding problems but I've used for years w/o any problems, it is very versatile. However, if you put it over something that doesn't last as long then you risk durabilty problems, but that's it. Not familar with Medalion either. In the future consider menzerna line, I think that product line famous for having nothing in them, like oils, that will effect your sealant of choice. My favorite set-up: Menzerna twins, p21s, Zaino, p21s.

For your choices-

Burlq - thanks a million! This is exactly the advise I was looking for. I'll try that order and let you know the results. I also had no idea that I could get even better results with using a finish coat of canuba over the Zaino. Guess that'll be my next product purchase.

Thanks again.
