Product Review: Lake Country 'Gold' Foam pads

Todd@RUPES

Just a regular guy
Let me first start this review by saying I am a PAD junkie, period. It is a sickness but I love foam pads...I have tested and own just about every pad made by 3M, American Buffing, The Edge, Lake Country, and Meguiars.. and a couple from Sonus.

One thing about pad foams is that many of the companies buy them from the same foam supplier so you get a lot of similar foam spread amongst compaines. Some of American Buffing foam is identical to Lake Country. The gray foam from Meguiars and 3M (as well as the 3M Ultra Fina foam) is identical.

Probably may favorite manufacturer is Lake Country though, because they have always been completely open and honest about their foam, and further more have really gone the extra mile to help me sort through problems I have had. Their customer service is truely second to none.

As we move into milder foams we have several choices from Lake Country.

Gray Foam- Light mechanical action, great for final polishing/jeweling, glazing, and applying AIOs/waxes/sealants.

Red Foam/Blue Foam- Athough some companies market these as different foams, I have been told straight from the source that they are identical in action, compensition, etc.. I personally cannot tell a difference between them but would say that red looks cooler ;) . Can be used on a very soft paint for final polishing, although the lack of mechanical action makes it a longer process. As well these are great for glazing and wax/sealant application

Gold Foam- Softer then the red foam/blue foam, these are the finest, softest foam pads made by Lake Country, and simply put they are awesome.

I have now used the Gold Foam by Porter Cable to apply several different sealants and waxes including

-Blackfire Sealant

-GlossIt Gloss Finish

-Klasse AIO

-Klass Sealant Glaze

-Meguiars #21

-Meguiars #26 Liquid

-Zaino Z2pro

-Zaino Z5pro

Let me say that overall my experience has been fabulous. No other pad has allowed me to spread as little product so far over the surface. For example I was able to cover my wife's whole car with Blackfire sealant by applying 2 dime sized dots to the paint TWICE. Four drops, entire car covered.

Similarly Zaino spread super far as well, only having to reapply dots 3 times to cover the entire size of my mother's car.

The pad feels very 'slick' on the surface and glides so easily that it actually makes applying a sealant kind of fun. The 'feel' itself is very different then any other pad I have used for this purpose, and I have never seen traditional far spreading products go this far. I feel like I am saving money.

Also the coverage I get is extremely thin and extremely even, which has greatly sped both the curing/hazing process and I have not had any issues (even with Meguiars #21) with any product streaking after application with his pad.

Super recommended. Two thumbs up for Lake Country :xyxthumbs:xyxthumbs

Great review man thanks for sharing! I hate applying sealants by hand so I will have to pick up one to test it out.

NP, usually one of the complaints with with using a PC/pad is that it sucks up too much product. For whatever reason this seems to be the opposite with this selection.

Don't give me too much credit Pat, I was testing a new product.

thanks for the review from a fellow pad junkie (I also have an addiction to polishes and micro fibers...lol)

;) I haven't caught the microfiber bug yet, I get all mine from Chemical Guys and have been happy so far.

Thanks for the review Todd!

Looks like I'll be ordering some more stuff...

I would recommend it, awesome awesome pads....

Thanks for the review Todd! Do you think these pads could offer an improvement over the gray and blue pads for taking jeweling/burnishing up a notch?

Thanks for the review Todd! I've been "junky-ing" it up myself by purchasing a couple sets of the new 3M UK pads (green, yellow, blue) in 150mm and 80mm. I can't wait to try them out, hehe.

I also need to pick up the TufBuf pad as well.

Nice review Todd.

I know a lot of the foams are the same, but it's seems like a lot of different pads from different companies do not hold up as long as LC. I have some LC pads that have been washed literally 100's of times and done tons of corrections since 2006 and still look brand new. I have always wondered this...

I always liked the LC VC pads that are now gone and always wondered why others did't offer the same tipe of backing. Especially in smaller sizes.

The Meguiar's rotary backing plate (w66 maybe? Black, lots of padding) does this on the Meguiar's SOLO pads. They fit PERFECTLY every single time. :nana:

The Megs pads just don't last that long. I've had the velcro come up on a few of the solo ones and the side walls get week and thin after a few cars. The Soft buff pads are very dangerous and I have had a few delaminate after a hand wash. The design is nice, but lacks quality and durability like LC.

TH0001- I was all ready to think "oh, just another zero-cut pad" but then you covered all the reasons why it's truly *different*, and I'm quite intrigued by how well it worked with the sealants. Thanks for the great review!
