Product recommendation for red Toyota Supra

Hi everyone,

I'm OVERWHELMED with all of the product choices, etc. and don't really have any idea on where to start. I've spent hours reading, but the number of choices just leaves me confused.

My car is a 1994 Supra Twin Turbo with red paint. It's been outside for 3 summers now and is starting to show the effects of sun. The paint is still very reflective and shiny, but it's covered in swirl marks and has a few scratches. Also, the door handles and a couple of the plastic panels are starting to mismatch in colour with the rest of the car as well as dull/lose their shine. I want to arrest this and correct as much as I can of it before it gets worse. Do you think I can reverse some of the colour mismatching? It's only noticeable in certain light conditions, usually as dusk hits.

I'm looking at getting this kit as a start:

Sonus SFX Kit

I'm obviously looking at the PC 7424, but are these pads the right way to go?

What cleaners, polishes, waxes, pads, microfiber towels, etc. should I be looking at to do a PERFECT job?

Thanks so much in advance for your help - I'll be sure to post before and after pictures.

James

Hi James,

I don't know how to help you with the color mismatch. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable about this can chime in. I can, however, tell you about products I've used on my red car that gave me results I was very pleased with.

For the swirl marks, you may want to try a combination of an abrasive polish (to actually remove the swirls) and a glaze (to conceal, through the use of fillers, whatever swirls/scratches remain). I used Poorboy's SSR1 and ClearKote's Red Moose Machine Glaze, but my paint was already in very good condition. Your paint sounds like it might warrant something more abrasive, such as SSR2.5, or perhaps even SSR3. A great many people here have used the 2.5 and were happy with the results. It's a very popular polish. Alternatively, you may want to go the Meguiar's route. I haven't used their polishes though so can't comment. Just remember that if you start with a real abrasive polish you will have to follow-up with a less abrasive one to break down any particulates that remain.

If you want to continue down the detailing path...after the polish (but before the glaze if you use one) you'll need a cleaner. Klasse All-In-One is by far the most popular paint cleaner. It worked well for me. Prime by Jeff's Werkstatt is another option. I remember reading that it's like an updated AIO. I can't speak from personal experience though as I've never used Prime before.

Instead of a glaze, you may want to put on a sealant. I like Four Star Ultimate Paint Protection. You can put this on top of the glaze, but you won't get nearly the same durability compared to a glaze-free surface. Once the sealant's on there, you may be satisfied. Otherwise you can top with a wax. Bunch of choices in that department. I like Poorboy's Natty's Blue. It works well on red I think.

Anyway, that's probably way more info than you need or want...and I didn't even address your main concern--the color mismatch. I'll defer to the more experienced detailers on that one.

I think the discoloration is due to the paint oxidizing. Try out Klasse All in One to remove the oxidation. For removing the swirling, well, there are 10's of polish combinations available. Run a search and find which ones you think will work best for you.

I would suggest SSR2.5 followed by AIO or equivalent Aj product then Pinnacle Souveran. Souveran makes red look as wet as I have seen it.

I agree. If it were ME, I would go AIO or Prime/RMG/Souveran and keep a fresh layer of wax on it, and for good measure, I'd use Crystal Mist after washing with a gentle QD for maintenance.

Also, a gentle car wash soap would be essential. P21S, TOL Bubble Bath, Poorboy's SS&S, Griot's....

Thanks so much for the responses guys! You've helped clear up quite a bit in my confused mind. My paint is single stage (as confirmed by paint transfer on a towel) - should I still go as aggressive as SSR2.5 for the polish?

cheers,

James

After more searching to clarify everythign you guy shave posted it's all making sense now, and it's actually really simple - it was all the acronyms that were throwing me for a loop (AIO, SG, P21S, etc.) Would you recommend doing the following:

P21S -> CLAY BAR -> SSR2.5 -> SSR1 -> AIO -> SG -> SOUVERAN

Or would you skp the SG step? This is a car that is outside a lot, will souveran hold up well?

cheers,

James

Since the car is outside, I would definitely go ahead with the SG. It is very durable. I'm assuming you are meaning P21S car wash as your first step. The steps sound fine. I would recommend getting some quality MF's and a good QD spray as well.
