Product Guilt

Do you guys ever look at all the products that you have and sometimes feel guilty that you spent alot of money on them , and some, you have only used a couple times. Hype sometimes gets the best of us!With new products always being released , putting old versions into obsolecence, I dont get a chance to get the full value out of some products. It always seems that were looking for something better, easier and faster to use.It sometimes gets out of control shopping on the net for more MF's, more polishes, more pads.Arghhhh! I guess thats just part of this hobby. I must admit, it's sure fun to see what works and what doesn't, but I do sometimes feel a bit guilty about whats invested in my detail cabinet.

I tell my wife she's lucky!!! I could be one of those guys spending three times as much sitting down at the bar room!!;)

I think I feel better now!

:)

No way. All the products that are highly praised here including PB, Klasse, Sonus, Diamondite, Eimann Fabrik, Detailers pride, wolfgang, pinnacle, clearkote, four star, blu job, clay magic, edge pads, menzerna and many others I have spent my hard earned money on and never regretted it

All have worked brilliant and made my work easier and now I am in a position to sell most of these to australian car enthusiasts

If I didn't try them out, I would still be using acid, alcohol, ammonia, alkaline and caustic based harsh chemicals on all cars I detail.

I never feel too bad about it. There are definately worse ways to sepnd money. And as far as products going obsolete I actually like some of the older versions of products that are being replaced, like Poorboys EX, so I'm gonna stock up.

I understand what you feel; I think part of it is being married, and wasting money on frivolous things seems more selfish. My wife is really understanding, but since my son was born about a year ago I don't try many new products. That's because I want to be more frugal and save more money, and because I have so many excellent products (ie 1Z polishes and Glanz, S100 wax and "lotion", Blitz Wax etc., and a huge amount of great local Japanese products and tools).

My cars look great, so I've decided to "draw the line", though I certainly will buy a few interesting items here and there !;)

I don't know about feeling guilty, but I do have some products that I don't use all that often. The kickers are the ones you find sealed, brand new and no idea when and why you bought them in the first place.

It's just part of the hobby. All my hobbies tend to be expensive after a while.

Having been a sports card collector, I feel much better about buying a can of Pinnacle for around $65 than a box of hockey cards for the same price that I am now hoping to get $10 for on Fleabay! ;)

Never!!!! Most of my products find some use and I can not put a price on the enjoyment that this hobby brings. :woot:

I really believe I get an endorphin "high" when I detail. Similiar to weight lifting. :xyxthumbs

Sometimes I feel stupid. I bought black bumper restorer the other day, but I don't have black bumpers. Mine are painted, like the rest of the car.

But it works well on weatherstripping, so I guess that's okay.

I know what you mean, I play golf as well!

My last set of irons (Hogan Apex Edges) saw one season. Haven't been out in 2 years :( I think I made it to the range once last year. Funny, been outta that scene for a while so I haven't bought a new club in ages....Heck, detailing is a lot cheaper now that I think of it....time to Add to Cart !:woot:

I keep telling my wife that "this is the last order. I don't need anything else", only for the UPS truck show up week after week. Damn! I have ran out of reasons as to why I need this or that latest product. I just tell her that it's my hobby and I could be doing worst things that cost more money. I think she has come to terms with it and understand s the satisfaction I get out of getting the car "sparkling".

My wife thinks I'm nuts!

So does mine until I detail her van then it is wow it sure looks nice!

I have tried to settle in on one line of product but the Mothers Reflections seems to be calling my name. I will try to resist the call! LOL

Hype does get the best of us unfortunately.

Ultimately though, you have to find what suits you best. Many products look very similar and I find myself choosing on over the other for various reasons. I just downsized my products a lot and I really don't feel bad about it. I have found a pretty good product niche and I will stick to it...for now :).

yup, i definately have buyers remorse sometimes. All of my polishes except for the Menzerna line. I wish i would have gotten them first, then i wouldn't have all these others ones. Also, poorboy's exp also didn't meet my standards. It is a great product, but very similar in looks to SG, and i don't htink it compares to SG as far as durability. oh well... its all a learning experience and its fun.

Thank god for the sample exchange!!!!!!

Rather than not using the products that I don't care for anymore and constantly buying new ones I just trade them off for something I was going to buy anyway....its a win/win situation.

Yet somehow I still find myself spending more and more money on stuff I don't need. I must have acquired over 10 new products this winter and haven't used any of them yet.

I only have a few products that I regret buying but the overall cost of those items is insignificant ($50-100 maybe). However, the value of everything in my cabinets (now approaching $2,000) could buy far more important things but detailing is one of the few activities I do that keeps me sane. Actually, it may be THE activity that keeps me sane. :o :nixweiss

Someone mentioned collecting sport cards. Heh, been there, done that; my collection is sitting somewhere in the house collecting dust. Granted, I have sold off most of the cards with any value but A LOT of money was spent on them.

Yes I definitely get buyer's remorse sometimes (and I've only been serious about detailing for 6 months). The other day I gave all of my "lesser" products to my brother-in-law. The Gold Class liquid wax, Black Magic wash and Meg's Paint Cleaner are 10x better than what he was using before so somebody's happy and there's no waste.

I find that I have to "cut myself off" from coming to this site sometimes though - it limits what I find here and decide I "need".
