Problem with LC orange flat pad on PC. Pad melt. (Newbie)

Reason I ask is because back when I first got my PC kit from TOTL, they included one of those orange flat pads but neither of the backing plates provided fit it. The 6" bp hung over the edge of the velcro a bit(the velcro was about 1/4" from the edge of the pad) and the 4" bp left about an inch of velcro around the out edge. I didn't want to use the 6" bp cause I knew I'd start to disinegrate the pad where the velcro didn't reach, due to the hook and loop on the bp. Figuring they wouldn't send a the pad with the kit if it wasn't supposed to be used with the bp's provided, I elected to use the 4" bp.......................that lasted all of one panel:wall As I was polishing I started noticing foam particles being flung all over the panel and that's when I noticed that the bp had actually melted through the velcro and began to rip through the pad itself.



I believe the lady who helped me at TOTL was Irene, who promptly replaced both my bp and the pad. She also directed me to the Vice president of Manufacturing at LC and he also gave me another pad and bp, but this pad had the velcro all the way to the edge of it so my 6" bp would work with it.



She never could explain whey they would send that pad with that kit when neither of the bp's would work appropriately, but she did take care of me very quickly and I got two pads and bp's out of it so all was well.
 
Really? My story was a bit different. Irene said there was nothing they could do about it and that it might be an issue with the PC. On the other hand, Don (from TOTL as well), said I could send him the pad and the backing plate and he would forward them to the 2 manufacturers. There might still be some hope then...



My BP filled most of the velcro in the back so I hope it was not the same issue.



Thank you for the info. Maybe I should try contacting the manufacturers myself and see if they would hook me up with a replacement.
 
Thread revival time! I had the same backing plate (Autoquip), and I was using it to polish out a car. Was using speed 6 for all of the polishing, orange LC pad. I noticed that the yellow (flexible) part of the backing plate was separating from the black part. The center of the backing plate seemed like it was beginning to melt from the hot temperatures. I emailed Autogeek about this problem, and they immediately offered to send me a LC backing plate. Autogeek's customer service never fails to amaze!
 
I had the same problem as Kapinnn with the same set up: My observation was that I used too much force and too much compound. The pad and velcro backing is the best I've used, yet too much force caused the same problem.



I solved the problem my learning to use a rotary when compounding.......results are miles better. I still use the PC for light work and wax applications or onestep.

I agree, I now use the rotary for correction and the PC to apply LSP and clean carpets.



Someone had mentioned that if you put a washer behind the backing plate it reduced the friction and dissipated heat better.
 
I melted a pad to my backing plate once too. It happened on one of those pads with the hole in the middle ,



i got some polish down in the hole, and the liquid allow heat to transfer melting the pad.



Was your pad completly dry before you started?



And did you keep misting it with some QD?



Thats the only way to melt a pad, through a liquid transfering heat.
 
Also from the looks of the pad, you are using way too much polish.



Dont be afraid to change the pad if you think it is not performing.
 
My PC came with a cardboard washer and the backing plate I just got from danase has a bakelite or 'pc-board' like washer as well. I've installed both of them. Since I'm a newbie, i haven't tried it yet, probably tomorrow. The backing plate is the 3.75" and I've got 5" pads.



Will it melt???? I'll let you know.

Rob.. The replacement that I got from Autogeek (Lake Country backing plate) also had the "pc-board"-like washer. Perfect description of the washer :) I think it'll help with the overheating issues.
 
I ran some DG 501 (yes the marine polish) on my 93 SAAB with both orange and white pads - no overheating, no melting. The PC works great and will likely meet my strictly hobbyist needs. I still don't know if I needed both washers but they seemed to do the job. Having both didn't create any instability in the pad AFAIK.



I'll top with 105 and AW once cured.



It has a little oxidation that the pads and 501 didn't remove. I may have to get a pre-cleaner next time it's up for a full clean/wax.
