Problem with LC orange flat pad on PC. Pad melt. (Newbie)

Yea, the pad looks like it's loaded with polish. However, the overheating is very evident from the scorched center of the backing plate. I have the same backing plate... I hope the same thing won't happen when I try to polish out my car...

It looks like the pad was loaded with polish....how much polish was u useing at a time...also how much pressure was you putting on the machine...by putting a lot of downward pressure you bog the machine causing it to over heat...the heat is transfered to the backing plate and pad....you only need the weight of the machine and a little pressure...the plate looks like it was heat distorted ...

AL

Considering you weren't standing on top of the machine when polishing, this is very bad... contact whoever you bought the stuff from and ask them what to do...

I've applied lots of pressure even to my rotary, with the same (well rotary) backing plate and the same pads and never saw so much heat... the backing plate looks like it went into the oven for a few mins and came out... good luck with that bro

I think you used too much down force..You bogging down the PC, when it start to boggin' down, the heat start tranfer from the BP > the pad. Man, I hope what I said it make sense to some of us :nixweiss

Rotary polishers aren't nearly as violent to the BP as a DA is.

Like prior post mentioned...this is not normal in my opinion. You need to contact whom you purchased from? Where did you get it?

My backing plate and pads are different then yours. I used mine for 4 hrs this weekend and put some pretty good pressure on the PC (speed 5) to get out some decent sized scratches. My orange pad got a bit squished in the center but is still useable..I will post some pics. You def should have gotten a washer. Mine was in the bag that contained the wrench. It may be irrelavant but you should have one. Its just a simple washer that goes between plate and backing pad

I ordered the PC 7335 (g-100) from autodetailing solutions and i don't think I got that washer... do you have a photo of it?

I think only the 7336 and 7424 come with the washer. In the instructions of the PC it talks about having the spacing washer when installing new backing pad. It just a simple washer that can be picked up from HDepot.

I was thinking that DA polishers would be more "violent" because they are constantly changing the direction in which the force is being applied on the threaded part of the backing plate. And when this get's kicked up to 5500 OPM, it seems like it a plausible explanation for what happened. I'm kinda worried now..

goherd90, is the washer absolutely necessary? I don't see how the washer or the lack of it would cause the overheating..

First of all, thank you all for the help.

I can't seem to think how I put so much pressure on it. I was working mostly on the doors and was just using enough pressure to keep the machine against the panel.

Also, I can't seem to find a washer for this in my PC box. What size washer is it? I'll go get one at Home Depot.

On my previous post I asked about the polish amount. How much is too much? I started with a quarter size in the center for the first door. Another nickel size for the rear door and another nickel for the trunk. Is that overkill?

I had this problem when I used the Meguiar's BP and pads years ago. I've since switched to LC BP and pads. I use my DA every week and haven't had this problem yet. I think it's your BP. Switch to the LC one and try using a different polish as well; I use Menzerna and get great results. Hope this helps.

I agree...I bet it was your backing plate. Go with the LC velco pads...they seem to be fine for me. I have both the 3.5 and the 6....

Do a search here on the forum as there is STEP by STEP procedure of how to use the PC properly. I seriously doubt the pressure you put on the PC had anything to do with it. Good luck

That's the thing, I did research it over and over. Watched a DVD on PC use from pinnaclewax. Don't think I did anything wrong except for the polish amount I used...maybe.

How much polish do you guys use per panel? (let's say a 2x2 area)

Yeah I got one on the way... =\

I talked to the top of the line folks and they have never seen something like that happen either. I wonder if the PC itself is not generating too much heat....

Thats the strangest thing Ive ever seen with your backing plate... That baby is COOKED !!

I have been putting massive pressure on my backing plate with LC pads for 2 years and Ive never had anything like that happen. It sure looks like the PC is jacked up to be putting that much heat on the plate.
