Printers

My last printer was a HP5514 and it is a pile of something. HP customer service is very optimistic but it never really worked properly.

So I need a new printer and need some suggestions because I don't have a clue as to what to get.

I mostly print documents mostly in black & white and some in color. Looking to spend about $100.

I'd appreciate any input!

Stick with a laser printer if cost per sheet is a factor.

I've used Samsungs for many years and recently switched to a Brother.  Brother has a few positive things going for it too:  execptionally good print quality with text and very reasonable cartridge costs when you finally do need to replace one.

A multifunction unit is really handy, some are 3 functions (print, scan, copy) and some are 4 functions with a fax function added.  Don't go with the fax if you rarely use faxes of course.

Finally, if you do a lot of multipage printing, think about getting a model that does duplexing.  (printing on both sides).

My Brother is the DCP-7065DN and it's a winner - I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

Picked up an Epson WF-3540 for $139 on sale at Best Buy. Its working great so far. It is so much faster than the early 90's HP printer that served me well for many years!

I'm a big fan of the Canon multi-function machines.  I seem to be using the scanner function quite a bit.  I found a reliable, quality source of ink jet cartridges from a person on eBay.  The refills are around $1 each.  The printers I have were in the $150 range, IIRC, but the newer one had a bunch of discounts, etc. at Staples and was only $75 out the door!  MSRP was $200.  Both these machines are on the wireless network.

I've got a fairly new Brother color laser at work.  It's been very good so far.  Cartridges aren't crazy expensive.  Machine has been trouble-free.
