Prestone Wax

After reading the consumerreports on car wax, the second overall best wax is Prestone (under Zymol), so i bought one. It contains petroleum distillates, amino functional silicone and morpholine, what the hell are those (synthetic wax) ??? Are they harmful to the clearcoat ?

By the way, i have a copy of the full report in a doc files, if someone wants it, email me (happy to help someone).

thanks in advance.

I wouldn't be scared to use something just because it contains petroleum distillates or amino functional silicone, I don't know what morpholine is...do a google search, might get some info. Anyway, the first two sound pretty typical of most waxes.

I'd be interested in seeing the article to see how they rated stuff...I believe you can use the attach feature if you push the "post reply" button...attach is more near the bottom of the reply page.

P.S. what Zymol was first...their Cleaner Wax?

Consumer reports don't think like Autopia. For the price you paid for the Prestone Wax you can purchase a trusted product which is well known to be clear coat safe.

Try something in your local autostore from the Meguiars product line, inexpensive and it is sure to turn heads.

Yes meguiars yellow wax #26 i think is a good long lasting wax and the results arent to bad. I'd bet it look better than prestone.

Hell, A-12-16 Cleaner Wax, would do the job and actually make the paint finish look darker, while removing slight oxidation..

Yes, i know you're all expert on car care, but i'm an apprentice. Among trustworthy testing, i noticed that they're not a lot out there. I will try my best to post the article tomorrow, they concluded that they're no perfect car wax. Among the criteria used: shine, durability, ease of use, swirls and scratches.

The only criteria i'm looking for is durability, because i'm the kind of guy that waxes ones a month only :)

thanks for your inputs.

This is the report from consumer reports, enjoy!

Hes not asking whats better than Prestones....

Maybe Meg's is better, Maybe Prestones products is better than some of Megs, personally, Megs doesnt do a heck of a lot for me, and Im real curious about trying Prestones product.....There was a detailer who used it on a Subaru WRX, who loved it, so before your advising some other product, try it yourself, and its competitively priced with Megs.....

I know they are legendary products out there, but you have to try them all to see the best (unfortunately, i don't have that luxury), so i have to go with testing lab. I haven't try the Prestone yet, but don't expect it to shine like glass, only durable (maybe waxing it ones every other month)

So i used the Prestone bullet wax this week-end, i stopped after a few minute, the result is good (shine), but it leaves tiny dark spots than can be remove simply by rubbing your fingers on it :nixweiss. The creamy solution seems to be free of contaminants, so is my pad.

Final result: :down :down :down (i had to returned it). I will exchange it for Zymol then :D

Sorry you didn't have a good experience...having good experiences is what makes detailing fun.

I'd rethink the exchange for Zymol...there seem to be better products. Things that I can recall reading about it is that it doesn't last long at all and the shine wasn't great in comparison to some others.

Meguiars and Mothers cleaner waxes seem to be quality products according to members who have tried them here. Also, Meguiars Gold Class is a great looking product, but it stains trim and doesn't last real long. The cleaners in it aren't very powerful either.

By now, you have probably read the raves on S100 paste wax. It is a good, easy to use product. It also doesn't have cleaners, so if you ever decide to use a sealant, you can apply it over the sealant without worrying about it compromising the sealant's protection. You probably can't get S100 where you got the Prestone, however you just might be able to make an exchange for some foam pads. ;)

Blue, Im suspicious of your prep work......What did you do prior to using the Prestone ?

Good thought, Patrick. I think there wasn't any, but that is just my impression.

In that case, S100 probably wouldn't be a great thing to use...it has no cleaners. A cleaner wax like Meguiars cleaner wax might be just the ticket for you.

I think the Prestone is a cleaner wax, but I guess it isn't just what BlueShark needed. I enjoy S100 on reasonably clean paint because it goes on and off really easy, and doesn't stain trim. Some people have had it last up to 3 months, so it seems reasonably durable for a carnauba. A good cleaner wax would probably last just as long in the same conditions, though.

Another option is the Klasse route, which is more expensive. Klasse All In One is a cleaner/wax which is a good base for their pure sealant, Sealant Glaze. In one super comparo of waxes, Klasse reportedly produces more gloss and improved the look better than all the rest of the waxes, but they say they'd still use a regular wax...superior results? why not use it? anyway...

"When CR ran Klasse All-in-one and Zymol through tests, both were impressive overall. Both gave car finishes a superior gloss. Both improved the look of weathered panels more than any tested wax, except the top-rated Meguiar's Cleaner Wax Liquid A-1216s and the discontinued and slightly abrasive liquid Blue Coral Blue Poly Sealant BP25. Both Klasse and Zymol were very expensive. We paid $23 for 17 ounces of Klasse and $40 for 8 ounces of Zymol (plus $8 for a Zymol "pre-cleaner"). We'd suggest using a good regular wax instead."

Nu Finish Soft Paste is the only wax that they tested in depth that had a "5" for durability. Too bad they didn't include Klasse and Zymol on the list...maybe they were afraid that those products would blow away the others, and they would loose their sponsorships.

Give the link a look, keep in mind that it is not an end-all study, but it is made for a consumer like you.

Kev.

Another cleaner wax that I think is worth a mention (if it's a cleaner wax you want), is Clearkote Moose Wax. Personally I think it leaves a finish easily as good, if not slightly better than GC Wax (haven't used #26 so can't compare with that). It's very easy to apply and remove, doesn't stain trim and definately appears to last longer.

Not the most popular wax out there being a cleaner wax but overlooked in my opinion..... Oh, and I also think it's fantastic on glass to.

Just my 2p's worth.

Alex :).

Well your guys, i only wash my car with car soap before applying the wax, as usual, but this time, the Prestone leaves some tiny dark spots while buffing that can be rubbed off with your fingers :shocked I will order the klasse AIO combo online (since we can't find some in Quebec, Canada), it is expensive, but i need good protection for next year ;) :( Winter will be harsh :D

Blue, you really need to have your surface prep'd properly before using any wax or sealant, or you may experience the results that you have. Im really curious as to why it spotted, its telling me there may have been oily spots in the paint, or some other pollutants......Also, you may want to try another product or two before giving Klasse a go, it is way less forgiving than most.....

Yes, i really have a lot to learn, however knows that proper waxing is more than wash and wax. Would you believe that it took me 3 years after buying my new car before realizing that i have to wax it :o I started to wax it often this year (and compouding it by a professional). I have to learn who to prep my car before adding tons of waxes on it

Like i said on previous post, i want a good protection against Quebec conditions and durability, Klasse AIO seems to hit the spot, i will order it.

thanks you all :xyxthumbs
