Presidential Details of Lancaster PA : Aston Martin Full Wetsand Detail

Barry that is so encouraging to see how you have grown so much! I think it inspires a lot of us here, myself included. I'd love to get the point that you have and select cars that are special (not that I don't choose to some degree now, but you know...).

As far as the work goes, I've been looking forward to this writeup and I was not dissapointed! That was just great work and an excellent writeup. Barry Theal brings it again!!

WOW! Excellent job, sir!

Any details on using foaming glass cleaner for getting the polishing oils off? I have never seen his done. Which product do you use and any particular reason you use this instead of IPA?

sick transformation, barry. Very educational too. Not a fan of the "HD" photos though-the car looks like it's got a halo in every shot?

Thanks Jaison

Amazing work like always Barry. A lot of people don't have the balls to sand aftermarket paint down like you did, and the results speak for themselves. That paint looks like the flat paint we are all used to seeing coming from the Aston Martin factory. I'm sure the owner was completely thrilled with the results, and tens of thousands of dollars were just added to the value of that vehicle.

John

Thanks John, yeah wetsanding like this isn't the easiest at times, but it sure is fun!!! You got to love it!

[Insert usual :bow regarding Barry Theal's work here...]

Barry Theal- Hey, I'm late to this party (no, I didn't buy the Magnum) but you knew I'd show up with some comments from the peanut gallery :D

Wow, that thing was even nastier than I'd expected...in the sense of simply grimy. Glad it's found an owner who'll take better care of it.

Man, the way you corrected some of the [crappy] paintwork was impressive. At least they gave you enough clear to work with.

Now of course it turned out swell...gee, look who did the work ;) ...but the way you went about it is something people can learn a lot from. Yeah, even with all the "don't try this at home, kids!" stuff.

Note that even Barry refines his sanding, none of this "how do I remove 2K scratches?" stuff. Note that even Barry will mask/work panel-by-panel to keep the area of operation manageable. Note that even Barry knows when to stow his ego and take the safe route rather than risk an "oops!". There are just sooo many valuable lessons in this thread.

But I still think that letting on how aggressive you got with the paper is gonna lead somebody to get in over his head :nervous2:

Hey, did you get a new BHB for the paintwork and demote your old one to interior duty?

Oh, and props to your photog, yeah he *is* good.

Hey, did you get a new BHB for the paintwork and demote your old one to interior duty? Can you speak in so not an old man way so I can understand you lol.

Heh heh, sorry to get all college-boy on ya!

That Boar's Hair Brush you were using around the emblems looks nice and new...not like the ratty thing you usually use for that. The one you used on the interior looked familiar though.

Hey hey! That's what I'm talking about buddy! She's beautiful and even in pictures you can tell the paint feels better than silk. I love the detailed write-up, the pictures documenting each step, and the small attention to detail during each step along the way. Another knock out from Barry Theal!

Waiting on that PM about the foaming glass cleaner used to get the polishing oils off! Thanks Barry!

It's basically just another way of cleaning oils/residue off the paint. Foaming glass cleaners contain alcohol and are a little alkaline, they're almost like a "clean wiping, no rinsing" APC. The foaming bit helps the stuff stay/dwell on the paint and also helps encapsulate [stuff] and lift residue up off the paint; that's what makes foaming cleaners better for this application than "regular" window cleaners. I use Zep 40.

Thanks Accumulator, this Zep 40 looks like serious stuff!

From a review on Amazon:

"This review is from: Zep 40, Non-Streaking Cleaner, 24 Oz

I am a professional window cleaner. While I use the soapy water and the squeegee for all the big glass, sometimes you need a spray product for the little panes, or the nooks and crannies. And sometimes you run across dirt and grime that just won't scrub off. That's when it's nice to have something like Zep 40 on hand.

This is a commercial product. Industrial strength stuff. For real. It is made from ethyl alcohol, ether, propane, and dimethylcarbinol. It has a fairly strong chemical aroma. It is not for use on hot windows in the summer sun; the can says "cold weather formula" and they mean it. I prefer not to use it indoors.

But Zep 40 really works. It will cut through grease, grime, bug crust, etc. like nothing else. It works fast and it works really well. You can often just give the window a spritz and walk away; it evaporates cleanly and seems to take the dirt with it. But it's usually best to spray a little on a cool window, wipe it around with a clean cotton cloth, then finish the window off with a microfiber cloth polishing."

I will check this stuff out!

I'm late to the party but just have to say that Barry - that was damn good! It's a shame that car got so mucked up, but you sure saved it.

BTW - I've used Stoners IG to clean plastic trim, works great removing dried wax, polish, etc

JB

lostdaytomorrow- Eh, much as I like Zep40, when I read that review I thought "oh sheesh...what a bunch of ad-copy BS!". I mean, yeah...it's good, but it's not some miracle product like that (window cleaning pro) guy makes it out to be. That "spray and walk away" bit *will NOT work*. Period. Does work OK in the summer though, I use the stuff on our household windows year-round...just gotta be sensible about heat/hot surfaces.

Thanks Accumulator, as with anything on the internet, I took it with a large serving of sodium chloride.

Barry, I am interested in which product that foaming glass cleaner is that you are using for a price effectiveness standpoint.

Just curious, what do you use to clean the polishing oils off Accumulator?

Extraordinary effort and documentation, Barry. This one has just raised the bar again! Luv the car, too !! Superb work.
