Preparing for Winter

The question; I have is winter is coming and I was wondering what kind of Detailing Tips you might have for preparing a vehicle for the winter weather. Here in California, we do not have the server weather conditions as in other parts of the country, but we do have rain and we had a lot last winter.

I do drive my vehicles during the rainy season and for the most part my vehicles are parked outside. Too many vehicles and stuff in the Garage. When the weather is dry I do use a Car Cover. Two of my vehicles are the wonderful color of Black, one Taupe and Yellow.

I have tried a number of different Car Care Products, but I noticed that they do not last very long. I don't mind washing weekly and quick polish every other week during the dry seasons, but I would like a little more protection during the winter because of all the grit and dirt that gets "flings" on the vehicles when driving.

If it takes multiple coats and a good paste wax to protect and make it last longer then I don't mind doing that. So I figure I could start now and by the time winter comes I'll have a good base.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions and guidance.

Don't forget Collinite as well. Any of those products have great durability but don't be afraid to use other products.

It's more likely for you to be able to apply a coat of wax or sealant every month or so than to just ignore your protection all winter. For others of us, we go for months with temperatures below freezing and can't do any paint work until the weather warms up. So your lucky :).

So my suggestion would be choose either of the prodcuts listed above or buy another brand and just keep an eye on the protection and apply when necessary or weather permitting.

With most sealants on the market today (and almost all from our sponsors) and for your weather conditions you should get 3-4 months protection. With a paste wax your looking at a month or so. Pick a sealant that is available or one that you like and apply that. If the weather breaks for a day or two, apply another coat and you'd be good to go.

I also have liquid sovereign which I think looks great but durability was less than I expected. Only about a month

Last winter..I used the Klasse twins and topped with collinite paste wax..and it was a proven winter combo...It lasted until the spring no problem...

This year I am going to try the Duragloss new product (#105)...and I may still use collinite over it..seems like the hard wax finish took most of the marring and kept the paint semi mar free...

I used duragloss's other sealant #111 (not the new one) on the other car last winter and it held up great also...so hopefuly the newer sealant will hold up as good or better...

But the Klasse twins are proven to me to hold up under harsh winter conditions...

The main thing is to have a nice clean paint surface so what ever you do use will have a clean surface to bond with...

hope this helps you

I have used the twins for a few years now. However the formula has changed and its apparently not as durable as before. I sill have old school AIO but SG is all gone so my winter coat is Z this year

About 6 weeks ago, before I discovered this forum, I did our white van with two coats of Black Magic Titanium Synthetic. I thought it looked great, then I tried the Duragloss #601/#105 combo based on comments in this forum on our other vehicle. Now the BM looks only ‘good to very good’ when setting next to the vehicle with the Duragloss. I have no experience with how long either will last but I hope to make it thru the spring yellow pollen storms here in the Southeast.

I also want to thank the forum old timers for their insightful information and willingness to share it. I found many good posts on how to convert my Porter Cable 7336 sander into a good detailing machine. The only downside is I have dropped about $100 in pads, backing plates, cleaners, polishes and waxes since registering last month.

I washed, polished with Poorboys SSR 1 using the PC and an LC orange pad, Duragloss 601 and two coats of Duragloss 105 by hand. The PC makes short work of the polishing step compared to hand polishing.

from my understanding...only the AIO changed..SG is the same as far as I know ...they weakened the cleaning power of AIO some say...but the new stuff it still a good base for SG..

SG is still suppose to be as durable..just AIO is lacking its strong cleaner..

Really. I must have misunderstood. Its funny, I just got the application process down to where I had none of the famous problems and the formula changed. I am getting some Z from a friend in the next couple of weeks so I may as well give it a shot any way
