Post polishing wipedown, alternatives to IPA?

I got a quart of 3M PrepSol in the locker as well.

I sometime have to go to it for some paint prep work, adhesive removal when I need something stronger.

But only when prepping for some refinish work.

The last time I was at the supply shop, I forgot all the details on good ole DX330....there were 2 or 3 variants. Some flashed off faster than others, etc. Good stuff all around -- just pricey.
 
Pricey is the Wet/dry paper was less than 50 cents a sheet and 400 was as fine a grit you could get.

Bought a gallon of primer reducer (new politically correct name) for a boat I am doing.

$25.00!

so after a 2 step polish, i did an ipa wipedown. I just sprayed the 90% & just wiped it off. Now i see a smeared haze all over the paint. Trying to figure out what I did wrong. Should I dilute it & try again, or repolish everything?

Never had that happen to me although I cut 91% IPA 50:50 with water. Was it hot and humid when you were polishing? Maybe try spritzing the paint with just plain water or QD first to see if the haze goes away before repolishing. :nixweiss
 
i tried spraying QD to see if it would clear up, but no luck. I repolished over it and it looks like it cleared/covered it up. But It was hot and humid out.
 
This time of year the heat and humidity can make wiping down anything streaky and if you're polishing outside, definitely do any kind of IPA wipe down in the shade. I'm just spraying a tiny bit of anything a tiny bit at a time when I want to wipe down.
 
i've never used ipa before on my paint. The only thing i've ever done before a polish is a wash and clay. The things i do after a polish are a wash or straight to UPGP then some p21s
 
Denatured alcohol is probably a bit too strong to use on paint in large areas,especially if polishing a whole car and wiping it down several times to inspect between steps. I think folks have always opted for the 50:50 IPA solution to be safer.

I thought the primarly reason to cut the IPA was to increase the dwell time by having it evaporate slower :think:



Noting that *I* just use it straight....
 
I always thought it was more for reasons of caution, but sure, I didn't think of dwell time and evaporation. Makes sense. Are you using 70% or 91%, just out of curiosity?

Heh heh, the honest answer to that is "yes" :chuckle:



I'm just using whatever I had around the house, but seriously... it's almost always ~90%, and it *does* flash off pretty fast some times so cutting it isn't a *bad* idea or anything.
 
Yeah, lots of issues with hazing and flashing off in the humid air around here, so I always made it practice to cut it.
 
I just fill the foam gun with Dawn and foam the car down after a good 2 step polish. Let it dwell and then just rinse off then dry. Since the vehicle was already clay/polished, no need to rub a wash mitt across it. You've most likely already had your hose and soap out anyway.
 
If like most and the name "acrysol was a trademarked name, it contains xylene.

Good to use with the proper precautions, however only if preping for refinishing of the vehicle.

If you read the label, and it is the normal formula, there will be serious warnings on the label.

Xylene must be handled with serious care, no matter what percentage is in the product.
