Hi,
I am new here and I want to get the Porter Cable 7424XP but not I have a few questiongs before I jump.
- Should I get it with the 5" or the 6" backing plate?
- Which package should I get (I already have the Meguiars claybar kit, Nu Finish Scratch Doctor, Meguiars NXT 2.0 that I got from my local store). I need it to be under $200 though...thats my limit my wife gives me for this toy...haha.
- Where to get it? Links if you can plz.
Thanks,

I have a smaller back plate for the PC so I can use 5.5 pads on it (back before I got the Flex). i think the PC turns the smaller pads a lot better and can do more correction with the smaller pads.

I'd suggest seeing what Troy, the owner of this site and the Detail City store can do for you. I know he worked up a great package for me when I got the Flex.

+1 on the 5.5" pads and the 5" backing plate.

Also remember that you're going to be buying a machine that will remove swirls (clearcoat), but you'll also want to buy the right wash tools to prevent their return.

Absolutely agree with the above. I use 6.5" pads and IMO that is the very outside range of the PCs ability. This is a case where I believe smaller is better when it comes to doing paint correction.

I also agree that Troy can give you the hook up in assembling a group of products that will meet your detailing needs.

Great, thanks guys for the info. I just pm'd Troy to see what he can do for me. What pads do you guys recommend? Also, do I need anything else besides what I have already...Meguiars claybar kit, Nu Finish Scratch Doctor, Meguiars NXT 2.0?

Two buckets (one wash/one rinse) quality wash mitt/pad (sheepskin or MF) or sponge (sea or grout). Drying media, WW towels or combined with Absorber type towel are mandatory.

A drying aid such as PB's S&W would be beneficial but not absolutely necessary. I use it with 99.9% of my washes.

I don't have any experience with the specific Nu Finish product. Follow directions and report back your experience. You might want to do an IPA wipedown after that step and before the NXT.

I haven't used the 2.0 version, but based on my experiences with the previous version of NXT I think you will be pleased with its performance.

Edit to add:
Let Troy give you his opinion on the pads. He is also a pro detailer so he will have first hand knowledge of the products he carries.

I just received my PC just recently and I went with the 5' backing plate and 5 1/2 pads and cannot imagine it pushing more than that effectively especially with correction.

I have emailed Troy and stilling waiting for him to respond. I hope the busy man can respond soon though.

Sometimes Troy is busy - he does details too. I know in the past, I have emailed and there has been a little lag time, but he generally responds within the day. If all else fails, give him a ring on the tele (at 1-800-541-4542).

PM sent. Sorry I have been a busy boy today.;)

Gotta go get ready for Poorboy and family coming over for dinner.

I'm off to buy some "homemade pies". Don't say anything.:D

Looks like I will be getting the 5" backing with the 5.5" pads. Do I need to use any glaze stuff after I use the Nu Finish? If so, what do you guys recommend?

I agree, I don't know how much of a cleaner/wax the new 2.0 version is, but if it has any cleaner you would probably be wasting some efforts and product by applying the glaze.

Which pads did you wind up going with?

I just ordered the 5" backing with 5.5" pads. This will be my very first time doing detailing on my car. I have a black 2001 BMW 530i with minor swirls/scratches. From what I have read so far I will be doing this:
1. Wash/dry car
2. Maguires Claybar
3. Polish with Nu Finsh Scratch Doctor
4. Make sure car is clean again
5. Wax car with Meguiars NXT 2.0

Please let me know if I am missing anything...I have probably 1 week to read and learn more before the PC arrives...cant wait!
