Porter Cable 7424 Or Zaino ? What to buy

Hi,

Background

I have a dark blue metallic mini cooper s with a white roof. Paint work is generally in good condition however I do have some minor scratches and a few spider webs when you look closely.

I have been using Meguiars range and have been happy with it. Normally use NXT wash followed by NXT liquid wax and if times allows finished off with Autoglym extra gloss protection.

The car normally looks fantastic however the gloss does not last as long as I would like.

Now…. For the question

I am tempted to move on to the next level of car care…… should I

a) Buy a Porter Cable 7424 and use Megs #80 followed by NXT

Or

b) Move to using Zaino and continue to apply by hand.

I can only afford to do one or the other this year. What would you suggest?

Thanks

PC in a heartbeat!! Is the zaino decision job dependant or will you be using zaino on all your details? Cuz i use the PC on every detail.

The only reason I was thinking Zaino is that you can get fantastics results without the need to use a Porter Cable and also the shine lasts.

Hold up there Perm...one of the tenets of this forum is that "process is more important than product"...if you have scratches/spider swirls, they will need to be removed/filled by some polishing process, regardless of what wax/sealant/protectant/LSP (last step process) you put on top (Zaino, NXT, EGP). Polishing will be made easier with a PC. The LSP's you mention all require careful surface prep for max life (lasting gloss), so even if you elect to live with the swirls, and go for the gloss, your surface needs to be carefully cleaned to ensure bonding of the Zaino or whatever.

Take a little time to read up a bit here--the board software was just upgraded, so all the beginner help may not be working, but you can look at this: http://www.autopia-carcare.com/how-to.html.

I used to be a long time Meguiars lover, then Zaino. Just got a PC and used with SSR and Klasse and I love it. I would say PC!

Either way the secret to a prefect finish is prep, not polish... :D

Get the PC. What will make the shiny stay longer is better polishing, not waxing. The NXT is good at hiding swirls for a short time but that wears away in a few week even though the wax is still there protecting the finish. If you prepared the car to a perfect shine before applying NXT, it will stay shiny a lot longer. Also look at what and how you are washing your car. That in itself maybe stripping/swirling the wax sooner than expected.

I Agree with what Setec Astronomy said.

I'm a regular Zaino user, but I would advise going with the PC first. Zaino you can pick up in a year and you don't need the entire line up to start.

Don't forget to budget for Pads. They can add up quickly. :buffing:

Many thanks to all who have replied.

Looks like it is Porter Cable with my Megs stuff.

Cheers

Good decision. :xyxthumbs The Zaino is only as good as what's underneath it. While I use Zaino on one of my cars and love how it looks I also use NXT on my other car and it isn't a huge step down. You'll get better results with the PC and Meguiars offers many products which will work well with the PC.

A PC is on my list as well. :welcome

Instead of using the megs stuff, why not try poorboys? Works better and the same price!

I'd get SSR 2.5 (same level as Megs #83, DACP), SSR 1 (Same level as megs #80), EX (a polish) and then nattys paste wax.

No LSP is enough to cover poor/improper/non-existant prep. What you would end up with just using Zaino is a shiny car with swirls for the next 6 months. Get the PC first, polish out your paint properly and you may decide that 80/NXT has a much better look than you ever imagined. A few months down the road, make the switch to Zaino if you wish.

Believe me, a good polishing with a PC will make all the difference in the world.

Try buying it by the gallons. Meguiars is a lot cheaper. To me, both product lines are excellent but the one advantage Poorboy's has is it works well in the direct sun.
