Portable Garages?

If you have a smaller car, not a lot of room, and/or need something that can easily be put up and taken down, one of those portable shade tents or easy-up canopies (often found at discount stores like Walmart, Target, etc.) is also a good cheap option. Depending on the model you get, some of them also have adjustable legs so you can lower the height on the side where the sun is to better shade the car and/or the area you are working on. I think I've also run across a few shade tents that have a peak height of nine feet (and up to 11 feet of length), so they may also be an option if you have a larger car. Depending on what you are looking for, it may be worth looking into...

I have no experience with the bigger more permanent options you are asking about, so I'll leave that to someone else.

Take care.

I know nothing about portable garages. That said I believe something along the lines of your link would work well.

The reason I'm replying is I wouldn't consider using one unless anchored *really well* either by 5 gal. buckets of water or better yet anchor eyes. The reason I say that is today I was detailing a car under bright sunny skies (and a carport) then halfway through - boom!, major winds and rain. It can happen just that fast and I wouldn't want my car hit by the legs of those things.

Agreed! Safety first (and not just for your car...)

Barbell weight disks or dumbbells can also be attached to the legs and used to secure the tents (in addition the the anchor eyes).

I wouldn't trust putting up a tent over my car unless it was bolted down which defeats the purpose of it being portable. Last thing I want is the tent poles falling over onto my car.

Maybe use those foam tubes that are used to insulate hot water pipes on the legs of the tent? They have a slit on the side so they could be easily slid over each leg.
