Polymer 'waxes' and german paint?

I don't think such an endeavor is worth the time or resources needed to "set the record straight". Personally I think all it's going to do is give everyone a black eye and be divisive among enthusiasts.

:argue

Right or wrong, there is always going to be someone prominent who firmly believes the opposite of you. You can't really argue with them all, and trying to tackle one individual becomes a personal attack in their mind...

I would walk.

I like Larry's site and his articles. However, on the phone I thought he was a little harsh. He interupted me several times during the phone call midsentence. He also told me I could REMOVE swirls with IHG.

Thats the reason I love this forum...WISDOM ABOUNDS! I agree...its a useless endeavor.

Exactly right..I dont mind if someone has the facts..I give someone with good facts a wide berth...But when he interrupts me in his haughty way just to tell me that all machines swirl paint, and that polymers cloud bmw paint, well, I have little patience for that kind of thing. But, as was suggested, discretion in this case is the better part of valor, and Im going to leave it alone....Case closed.

I'ved been wondering about the question "German paint vs other paint" since i read about it on that site. I wish we could get some input from someone "in the know" like BMW or someone on the subject instead of heresay or testimonials...

i have another reason to wonder about the subject after i got a "booboo" in my 2002 m3 and got it fixed and they did NOT use German paint (Glasserite i assume) and now i'm wondering if there will be a difference in the response of my wax etc products between the the fixed area and the rest of the car (?)

I'd say that Ron Ketcham was somebody who was definitely "in the know" as he has over 30 years of experience in the car care industry. The company he works for has been approved by 8 of the 15 largest car manufacturers (including Land Rover & Daimler Chrysler) for the auto care supplies they provide, which I believe are all based on proprietary formulations. Anyway...to get to the point, he was always an advocate of using polymers for daily drivers. Oh, and yes, his company has a team of chemists.

Thanks for the feedback. I haven't been around the forum all that long so I don't know who Ron is and in fact i don't even see his name anywhere in the thread so i'm clueless on that one...good to know that info though..

since i'm clueless, and for conclusionary purposes, am i to assume that german paint (glasserite/other) is not much different than any other and no need to worry about my "mixed"paint as far as whatever i happen to put on it (wax, polymers, etc)?

i pretty much plan on sticking with p21s in the summer since i'll wax more often (i'm in Denver) and p21s or sovereign over klass aio and sg in the winter...

thanks again,

Steve

There may be some truth in Larry's statement about clouding of the paint. There has been much discussion of this in the past. I don't know how far back archives have been kept. You may be able to find something via search.

I have tried many different "waxes" on our cars - German and domestic. If clouding does really occur it is extremely subtle and most people would never detect it.

As always, use what feels good to you!:D

I don't think you're clueless at all. It's better to have a non-assuming, inquisitive attitude like yours than to pretend like you know everything. :up

I know I posted info about Ketch and his opinion of polymers, but after re-reading Larry's statement, he may actually have a point. Klasse SG, which many here on this board consider "old technology" did have a tendency to haze up my black BMW. However, keep in mind that several other forum members had this same problem on American, Japanese & European cars. We're talking about people that have been using Klasse for a long time too... (Hook, BigBoyhf, ShowroomLincoln). In my case, this hazing seemed to happen after washing the car, which suggests that Klasse SG actually is hydroscopic and can cause hazing or clouding of your paint. IMO, if you stick with the newer polymer sealants like BF, Platinum & Zaino, you won't have any problems.

But to answer your question, I'd be very very surprised if you noticed one part of your car reacting differently to a polymer sealant than another part of your car simply because one part of your car had german paint and the other part didn't.

Question to others: Am I wrong in assuming that this hazing problem is what Larry is talking about?

BTW, P21S is an excellent choice.

I've had Zaino on the BMW for months now. This is longer than I have had any of the other products on because they either developed problems ie hazing, or just did not last. The Z is out performing anything I have previously used and I am exceedingly pleased with its look as well. The ZFX took care of any application issues and will now be my drug...err....sealant of choice from now on. I think that it is time to clay though, and touch up a few nicks and swirls. I am just waiting for a cool day, so I guess sometime in December should do it.....

As a side note, the Aquapel is finally after about 4-5 months, breaking down. Time to refresh. The summer rainy season in Florida has taken it's toll..... 5 months of superior windshield protection in a seriously rainy environment for about $10 seems worth it to me!

Intermezzo is correct, I had various hazing problems with Klasse. All were on American finishes, a Lincoln Town Car and a Ford Explorer. It occured after washing and gave the appearance of severe swirl marks. After numerous battles fighting the "haze" I called it quits and stripped off all the Klasse. I have since switched both vehicles over to Zaino and have not had a single problem since.
