Hey everyone. I thought it would be interesting to see what percentage of autopians use QEW or S&W compared to those who use a conventional washing technique. I know sometimes your washing technique may alter, but let's say which technique do you use on the majority of cars you detail?

I have water restrictions here in Australia, so i cant use a hose to wash my car at all, so its QEW all the way for me or risk being fined by the, for want of a better term, water gestapo. Fines run you A$300 ( US$225 ) for non-compliances!

No restrictions here, I prefer a good, old fashoined hose and 2 buckets. But honestly I havent tried QEW. Yet. But with winter fast approaching, I think Im going to order some and try it.

I just looked at your link 6_cyl_of_fury, your Falcon is SWEET! That is so much cooler than any Ford we get over here, Except for the Mustang and the GT. I wish Ford would import it here as a midsized car! Looks like a great replacement for the (long dead) COntour SVT. What are the specs (eng, HP, etc) and what would one cost in US dollars?

What are these?

S & W is Spray and Wipe by Poorboyâ€â„¢s, itâ€â„¢s a waterless wash for vehicles:

QEW is explained pretty well in the following threads:

Both are very good products.

I prefer bucket and hose. Although, QEW did get me through last year's winter and I'll do the same this year.

When we have those dayz when my hose won't freeze, I'll do a classic wash. When the car get's to the point where it looks white...QEW isn't goin' do it for me.

I havent bucket washed in about 4 months, been using qew every 1 or 2 weeks, its amazing. Ive also tackled my moms van and g/f's car, which are not as well kept as my car, and both vehicles were pretty dirty, far dirtier than my car ever gets, and QEW worked wonderfully w/ no marring on either one.

I've had two bottles of QEW for almost five mouths now and still haven't mustard the nerve to give it a try on my black car. With winter quickly approuching I may just give it a try well soon. Everything I've read so far seem to indicate that it's safe.

Using the two bucket system with QEW made me feel a LITTLE better the first time I tried it on my red car, but I still almost had to force myself :o

QEW is a product that if I just stumbled across in an auto parts store I would have never even considered. But after I read some threads on it here (I linked some a few posts up from this one), and when they had the two-for-one sale I decided to give it a shot. I still feel better using a hose, but it definitely has itâ€â„¢s place and seems to work well.

Interesting that it is just about even. I'm sure if this was done a year ago it would have been 90 / 10 in favor of the bucket and hose method. Thanks Scottwax and others for turning us on to such a convenient product.

My vote goes for QEW, as with many others I was terrified that it was gonna marr the paint and what not but everything after my first use with it turned out fine. I still prefer the conventional wash, but with winter coming up and the temps dropping, I would rather QEW wash in the garage instead of freezing outside, plus not to mention the hose freezes up.

I have S&W (don't have QEW), and usually use it between conventional washes. Can't beat 2 buckets + a hose IMO.

OK, I am officially curious.

But can someone explain to me what the difference in using a QD spray and S&W (or QEW) is in terms of causing marring?

In other words, other threads that I have read here indicate that a QD should only be used when the paint is very clean. Even if the car was washed the day before, if you drove the car for a day, you shouldn't use a QD because of possible marring/swirls.

What exactly makes S&W or QEW safer than a QD?

Its about the same size as a Taurus ( they tried to replace the Falcon with the Taurus but it was a major sales flop ). They have sent some stateside for evaluation but thats about all I know. Pricing is about A$45,000 for my model of car ( ~US$30,000 but Im sure they will be cheaper in the US like the Monaro/Pontiac GTO ).

The automotive union in America is the biggest hamstring to importing cars. And for the record, Ford Australia made a small SUV called the Territory that is almost identical to the Freestyle. You'd think they'd use the same design instead of developing two different cars!

FREESTYLE

The engine is a 4L inline 6cyl making 245hp in standard form. Mine is tweaked a bit and making around 300hp. There is a turbo version making 320hp (std) and 360hp (sports) but can be wound up to 550hp with some minor mods but leaving the internals stock.

This is the sports turbo

Heres a link to an article on the engine....

I can't speak for qew, but only for s&w. Spray and wipe contains more lubricants and surfactants than a normal qd. Steve from poorboy's has stated that s&w has more lubrication than soap and water. I'm sure qew works similar to s&w though. A regular qd is really meant to be used on a clean surface or right after a washing. Although I've used qd's like eagle one wet and meguiar's on a lightly dusted vehicle with no problems, I feel safer with s&w.

Also, most qd's contain silicones or whatever to add that extra pop to the paint. Spray and wipe contains no silicones or ingredients of this nature. This makes s&w useful for not only paint, but vinyl, glass, and even leather. I don't want to use a qd product that contains silicones or gloss enhancers on my tonneau cover. Spray and wipe works great for this purpose.
