For me, detailing is a paying hobby... it pays for flight lessons and vacations.

95% of my clientele are firefighters, cops and EMS personnel.

Sorry I set the poll up wrong I should have included part time detailers as an option.

I don’t think you made a mistake!!! You do this full time or you don’t.

More of my "Autopian Heresy" follows ;)

I do it primarily because nobody else around here is gonna do it to my satisfaction and it needs to be done. It's not something I'd especially miss if cars magically stayed detailed without my efforts or if a clone of myself were a local professional.

I've often posted that if ScottWax were in my town I'd be one of his best customers and the same goes for a few other Autopian pros (I suspect you guys know who you are ;) ). But I've seen the "afters" of my local pros and they're worse than my "befores".

Yeah, I figure this is sorta heretical because Autopians are expected to just *love* detailing, and I do enjoy it to some extent . But for me, detailing cars falls into the same category as housework, landscaping, shining shoes, sharpening tools, etc. There are a lot of things I'd rather do and life is short.

Good thing you pros don't see it the way I do, and that's the way it oughta be.

I do it for money, but that's an afterthought. What I personally enjoy is trying different products on different cars and seeing what kind of results I can get. Kind of a mystery, you know? I've always been a materialistic guy.

The other part I love is the reactions from customers I get. Every time I get a new customer, I have a chance to show them an entirely new realm of quailty car cleaning. Just about everything we Autopians do in our regimens most people haven't heard of. The satisfaction I get knowing that I got someone to raise their standards for car care is just awesome. And on top of it, they use me exclusively!

I'm not going to lie, when it comes to my own car, I lose some interest in detailing. I keep it clean, but I find it boring having to labor over something I see everyday. What I like about detailing is exploring different cars, products, techniques, and the unique challenges each provide.
