I don't see how anyone who doesn't enjoy detailing could make a living at it.

So true.

In this type of business, you really, really, really must enjoy detailing or it will definitely come back to haunt you. I know of a competitor who fit that description, and let's just say he went back to his corporate job.

I love Detailing and it’s 70% of my income but running the buz end of it is hard, well I can say this, my young enthusiasm ways is gone now I’m 49 years old and been self employed now for over 20 years and I’m physically tired. If I did not save up and invested into things I would right now have to work as I did when I was young.

I know most of you are young and have lots of energy but if you don’t save up now time will catch up with you. Hard work takes its toll on the body and after many of years your young enthusiasm ways you can’t rely on no more. If I had to do it over again 20 years ago I would have gone to school to learn how to run a buz instead of learning it the hard knots way. But it’s never too late to go to school but for me I always had an excuse not to. Unless you have rich parents to rely on you better save save now.

It’s one thing to enjoy a skill and another to be a business person. A sure way to ruin a hobby is to start a business your not prepared for. We had a customer complain about a “few very small water spots on his Jag wire wheels. My helper who is a excellent detailer had tackled those wires and I had looked them over myself. After the customer pointed them out to me, who’s face was 6 inches away from the wire LOL, I quickly repaired it. After the customer drove off my helper went into a outrage over the incident. Evidently the customer was looking for something to complain about to make himself feel good. I had to please the customer and calm the helper, that’s business.

Maybe it's OCD and being full time is my fix.

I absolutely love it. Sometimes it seems as if I get more out of the detail than the customer. Not the money; the pride and accomplishment.

Same here. When I used Carnauba Prime + CJ on a black Escalade, I kept hoping the lady who owns it would come home before I left just so I could see her reaction when she saw it. She didn't though. I put in the garage and left. :(

:o

Both, actually. I hate having my car looking subpar, and I learned everything as a hobby. I will fix up cars for people on occasion for money, but it's not a full time (or even part time) job.
