Polishing painted stripes

I have read allot of posts and tried searching for this asnwer but with no luck. Apologies if it has been covered before.



I have the 7424XP and am using Lake Country pads along with Meguiars 105 & 205.



My brothers car has painted racing stripes on it. My question is... Do I need to avoid these stripes? We are both concerned with me damaging the stripes. My guess is that the 7424 will not harm them but I wanted some sort of confirmation from you all before chancing it.

Should be extra careful with stripes. If they're not clearcoated, you dont want to touch them with a polisher. Often times its good to tape over them to be safe. If they were not put on professionally and if the adhesive is bad under them, they could get damaged.



Pay special attention to wax build up on the edges of the pin-stripes as well.
 
Like Ben mentioned, the safest way to approach this is to tape the stripes off. I'd tape as you go so the tape adhesive doesn't pull some the stripe away from sitting there too long.

You'll notice it has a thick strip surrounded by a thin one. I was hoping to use the 7424 on the thick one as well as it has swirl marks. Would you suggest taping off the thin one and then hitting the thick one and the rest of the car?



I believe that the stripes were laid down and then clear coat was applied to the whole car. Is there a way to verify this? If that was the case, is it safe to use the 7424 without taping at all?

I don't think it will matter which one you do 1st really. But make sure to tape off the edges or you'll risk damaging them. Not worth it! Use blue 3M painter's tape from Home Depot.



The way to tell if they are taped over or under the clear is to feel for a hard line that can be peeled back(be carefull).
 
Be *VERY* careful peeling off your tape; pull it gently and at an angle. And don't leave it on there overnight or anything like that.
