Polishing/Maintaining surfaces made of Granite/Marble

I recently just moved into a new place and now have some marble countertops, except, they are dull and lifeless.



Furthermore, the home I was at over vacation had full granite countertops in a dark color and they had this yucky haze over them after cleaning with Windex (owner's product of choice). She has them polished once a year but the haze comes back quick.







Anybody with experience, what should I polish/protect these porous surfaces with? Even more, what's safe to maintain with?

But yes we had a house built and had all marble and granite flooring/counters so I have seen them finish the surfaces. For the laying the flooring,they had waxed it. They had a huge tin(like you see of car wax), with some sort of yellow wax. They use the wax and a huge floor polisher/buffer and used that. The counter tops and granite tables came prepolished and never needed a polish so can't help you with that.



Oh yes sorry as for maintaining it, we just cleaned it with a damp rag. We never had anything repolished so can't help you with that one bro.
 
I use AIO with a finishing pad on my marble counter tops and jacuzzi. Makes them much easier to clean weekly....This marble is man made though, not sure if yours is natural????
 
Good question Sean. I recently installed marble counter tops in two of my baths. They are getting hazy after a few months. Speaking with the people in the store, I was told it has to be polished/cleaned about twice a year. They had the products on the shelves there, but haven't had time to really look into it or get a tutorial yet. New house and tons of things to do. After I look into the products they have on the shelves, I'll make a decision on whether or not to use car products. There is definilty a difference between man made and natural stones though. You'll probably have a tutorial/how to written with like 20 pics before I make it back to the store. :o
 
We have a lot of granite and marble, and I just clean it with either Lysol Kitchen cleaner or Cinch 2-in-one, both *very* mild products. I dunno what you should use to polish it (I'd ask a cut stone contractor what they recommend), but once you get it the way you want it I'd expect that just regular cleaning with the right stuff should keep it nice. I've never repolished any of ours in the five years we've lived here, and even the granite floor tiles are still nice. I suspect that *frequent* cleaning makes a big difference. Sorry that doesn't answer your dilemma.



I tried AIO one piece of marble, but it left a faint haze, like the protection it left behind clouded the marble a little, so try an inconspicuous spot first and see if you like it. After that happened I decided to just clean it lest I do something I'd regret.



Remember that granite and marble are different things, marble being much more sensitive.



You might want to try a steamer, at least I'd assume that there's no way water (liquid or vapor) is gonna hurt the stone. But for polishing, I'd think that an Autopian, armed with a PC (or maybe a rotary) and the right polishes, should be able to get things ship-shape in no time. Trick will be to get the right polish.
 
I've had excellent results on my granite countertops with this routine. No haze or streaks.



I clean them daily with Marbamist® Countertop Cleaner (spray and wipe), polish with International Stone Polish® Countertop Polish every week or two, and seal with Stone Spray-N-Seal® every year or two. All these products are from Stone Care International (SCI)
 
Flitz sells a marble polish. As far as the haze it always is on there because the spray chemicals leaves a residue. You can just wipe them down after using a chemical with a damp towel. There are some cleaning products you can buy at Home Depot that works well too.
