I've had this shamy for years now, but now that I have tha autopia bug, I want to make sure its safe to use.

The things is rock hard (or verry stiff) in the position that it dries in, but once you get ut wet its really soft. I havent been able to find anything that grabs water as well as it does. What is it called, and is it good/safe?

Sounds like a natural sheep skin chamois. Many people say not to use them. They are most likely fine to use as long as you keep them clean. I prefer a microfiber chamois though.

I have used a genuine Chamois for about 40 years with fairly good results however since graduating to Autopia I have become aware and suspicious of the damage it can introduce. I moved on to Waffle Weave Microfibre, literally last weekend, and now save the chamois for the windows. :2thumbs:

It could also be an Absorber; they, too, are stiff when dry. Is it square, or an irregular shape? And is it thin and leathery, or thicker and a wee bit spongelike? the square spongy things are Absorbers, the thin irregular leathery ones are natural chamois.

Sounds like an absorber. It is thick and square in shape. Now that I think about it, there is a small tear, and I can see little fibers.

So now that we know its an absorber, does this comment still stand? Or was it just regarding sheep?

I should have thought more about this before I replied. If it has fibers it is most likely an absorber or a Water Sprite. What color is it. Absorbers come in many colors, but Water Sprites are tan in color. Either one is good for drying, but you might want to buy a new one.
