After doing weeks of research, I've come up with the following list of products to use on my own cars. I'm a hobbyist/enthusiast who has a few things in the cabinet, but I really need to improve my inventory of detailing products. Please take a moment to review my list, and give any advice or suggestions you are willing to share or point out anything I'm missing, or even things I don't need.

I'm particularly interested in finding the most economical solutions (sales, kits, etc.) Such as the PC/PB kit available here at DC. Yeah, know the Meg's 105/205 seems better, but I don't see a kit for that.

I'll add what I can to your list. I've been out of the game for a while, so I may not be up on the latest and greatest. My comments are in italics.

Wheels & Tires
  • Wheel cleaner - P21S Gel (second choice Sonus R2000)--I use regular Megs wash for my wheels with great results.
  • Tire cleaner - Poorboy's Bold N Bright--I also use the same Megs for this with a stiff tire brush I picked up from Advanced Auto. Gets the job done pretty well.
  • Wheel brush - Boar's Hair--Your local Audi dealership will offer a great brush for $4. I've been buying these for friends for quite some time now.
  • Spoke brush - Daytona Speed Master
  • Lug nut brush - Swissvax--I just use a terry cloth
  • Tire brush - ???--See Tire Cleaner
  • Wheel wax/protectant - Klasse All-In-One--I've had great results with PB's Wheel Wax. 2-3 coats seem to last quite a while.
  • Wax applicator - ??? (drill attachment or finger pad?)--I just use a regular wax applicator pad

Convertible Top
  • Cleaner/conditioner - Raggtopp kit (second choice 303)
  • Cleaning brush - ??? (Oxo wash brush seems to be discontinued)

Engine Bay
  • Cleaner - Good excuse to use up my George Foreman's Knock Out?
  • Brush - Use wheel/tire/wash brush?

Wash
  • Soap - I have Meguiar's Gold Class
  • Mitts - Sheepskin mitts (brand?)--You can buy them locally, but they do shed and replacements are needed on a somewhat regular basis.
  • Bucket - I have Qty 2 Homer Bucket (Home Depot)
  • Dirt trap - Grit Guard (really needed? Fit in the Homer Bucket?)--I have one, but I don't think I've ever used it. Not needed in my opinion.

Drying
  • Drying cloth - Qty 2 Cobra Waffle Weave Microfiber
  • Drying tool - I have California Water Blade
  • Crevice drying - I have an air compressor
  • Quick wax - I have Eagle One Wax-As-You-Dry

Paint Cleaning
  • Clay Bar - I have Clay Magic blue kit--I really love Wolfgang clay
  • Lubricant - I have lots of Meguiar's Quik Detailer
  • Towels - I have generic microfiber(should I get better?)--As long as they are good quality without tags, you should be fine.

Paint Polish
  • Polish - Meguiar's 105 & 205 (second choice Poorboy's SSR1 & SSR2)
  • Polisher - Porter Cable 7424--You might want to look into the newer, more versatile machines.
  • Plate - 5" flexible hook/loop
  • Pads - Lake Country 5.5" (need to determine CCS or flat, qty and colors)

LSP
  • Sealant - Poorboy's EX-P
  • Carnauba wax - Poorboy's Natty's Blue (or Red)--If I had to choose between the two, I'd probably opt for the red.
(Both or just one or the other?)

Windows
  • Cleaner - I have Eagle One 20/20 Perfect Vision--Pick up some Stoners Instant Glass.
  • Towels - I have generic microfiber(better MF for windows?)--They can be the same quality as your others, you just might want to dedicate 5 or so to windows only. That means washing them seperately too.
  • Protectant -I have Rain-X Original
  • Tools - Stoner's Reach & Clean (second choice Windshield Wonder)

Dressings
  • Tires - I have Black Again--Shining Monkey Non Spitting Tire Spray is all I have used for the last 3 years. One of the most underrated products out there IMO.

  • Rubber/seals - ???

  • QD - I have Meguiar's Quik Detailer
  • Towels - I have generic Microfiber (Better MF needed?)

Interior
  • Dusting - I have Swiffer dusting towels

  • Leather - I have Lexol Quick Wipes leather cleaner and conditioner
  • Vinyl - I have Vinylex Quick Wipes vinyl cleaner
  • Tools - ??? (need detailing brushes?)

You have a pretty extensive list for just getting started out. This hobby can get pretty expensive, especially when the bug bites. All of the comments I left are based on what I find works for me. You'll find that detailing is a lot about personal preference. What works for some may not work for you.

I was going to add my thoughts to audiboys, but I think it would get crowded.

After doing weeks of research, I've come up with the following list of products to use on my own cars. Wheels & Tires
  • Wheel cleaner - P21S Gel (second choice Sonus R2000) P21 Gel is very good and safe, but expensive. If you clean your wheels well and then seal them with wax or sealant, you should be able to clean them with your left over car wash solution.
  • Tire cleaner - Poorboy's Bold N Bright. BnB does have cleaners in it that are supposed to work well. Initially, you will probably want to clean them with something stronger and a stiff brush to get them really clean.
  • Wheel brush - Boar's Hair
  • Spoke brush - Daytona Speed Master. Good choice. I have the EZ which is very similar. They work well.
  • Lug nut brush - Swissvax. I have one of these as well. I think there are some cheaper options that would work just as well for you.
  • Tire brush - ??? I'm not sure what mine is, but it has pretty stiff bristles to really clean the tire well.
  • Wheel wax/protectant - Klasse All-In-One. You can use KAIO, but I don't find it to be as durable as some of the other offerings. DG501 (Duragloss) is a very good cleaner/sealant that works exceptionally well on paint and wheels.
  • Wax applicator - ??? (drill attachment or finger pad?) Just use the cheap yellow foam applicators, one of the gold or red LC applicator pads or if you want to apply with a machine, use a blue, red or gold LC pad.

Convertible Top
  • Cleaner/conditioner - Raggtopp kit (second choice 303)
  • Cleaning brush - ??? (Oxo wash brush seems to be discontinued)

Engine Bay
  • Cleaner - Good excuse to use up my George Foreman's Knock Out? Lots of people will just use an APC mix for engines. They are the most cost effective.
  • Brush - Use wheel/tire/wash brush? That's fine. As long as it gets into the areas that you need it to. This is another area where the Daytona brush will come in handy.

Wash
  • Soap - I have Meguiar's Gold Class That should be fine. I have heard some good things about it. Poorboy's Super Slick & Suds is very good and DG901 too.
  • Mitts - Sheepskin mitts (brand?) This will come down to personal preference. Some like sheepskin, some like mf mitts, some like sponges. It all depends on what works best for you.
  • Bucket - I have Qty 2 Homer Bucket (Home Depot) Buckets are buckets. As long as they hold water and enough of it.
  • Dirt trap - Grit Guard (really needed? Fit in the Homer Bucket?) Some people swear by them. I personally don't use them, but my washing technique doesn't allow my wash media to go to the bottom of the bucket.

Drying
  • Drying cloth - Qty 2 Cobra Waffle Weave Microfiber WWs are the most popular drying towels. They should be fine.
  • Drying tool - I have California Water Blade PLEASE don't ever touch your paint with that! You can use it on your windows if you like, but not the paint. If there is anything at all on the surface, you will drag it across the paint and cause damage.
  • Crevice drying - I have an air compressor That will work. I use an electric leaf blower.
  • Quick wax - I have Eagle One Wax-As-You-Dry Not familiar with that. DG Aquawax is very good for this. Actually, a lot of members will use a QD as a drying aid.

When you are done rinsing the car off, take the sprayer off the end of the hose and just let the water flow gently over the paint (low pressure). This will sheet the water and take the majority of the water off of the car. It will save you some work. You don't have to do this, but as I mentioned, I use an electric leaf blower to blow the car off after sheeting the water. There is very little water left on the surface at all. I don't have to "dry" the car, just blot the random spot here or there and I'm done. For me it's easier than a conventional drying method and I touch the paint less, which lowers the chance of instilling any unnecessary marring or scratches.

Paint Cleaning
  • Clay Bar - I have Clay Magic blue kit Good stuff.
  • Lubricant - I have lots of Meguiar's Quik Detailer Doesn't the kit come with lube? You can use a QD, just make sure that it's slick.
  • Towels - I have generic microfiber (should I get better?) Give them the scratch test. Take a CD and rub them on the CD. If they scratch the CD, they will scratch your paint. If so, demote them to wheel, engine, door jamb, etc. duty and buy some quality ones for the paint.

Paint Polish
  • Polish - Meguiar's 105 & 205 (second choice Poorboy's SSR1 & SSR2) The 105 & 205 are a great combo. The PB polishes work well and are very user friendly, but the Megs polishes will be a little more versatile and will work quicker. If you go the PB route, get the SSR1 & 2.5. Skip the SSR2.
  • Polisher - Porter Cable 7424 That's fine, but they just came out with a new version, so get that one.
  • Plate - 5" flexible hook/loop Fine.
  • Pads - Lake Country 5.5" (need to determine CCS or flat, qty and colors) Like I told you before, personal preference. I recommend PFW, orange, white and blue. A couple or few of each if you can swing it.

LSP
  • Sealant - Poorboy's EX-P That would be fine. Or DG501 or DG105. Both very durable.
  • Carnauba wax - Poorboy's Natty's Blue (or Red)
Both are good, but I prefer the Red.
(Both or just one or the other?) Just one.

Windows
  • Cleaner - I have Eagle One 20/20 Perfect Vision If it works, use it. Some others to choose from would be Stoners Invisible Glass or Sprayway.
  • Towels - I have generic microfiber (better MF for windows?) Once again, if they work for you, then use them. If not you can try a better quality towel. As audi mentioned, you will want to keep your glass towels separate from the others.
  • Protectant - I have Rain-X Original
  • Tools - Stoner's Reach & Clean (second choice Windshield Wonder)

Dressings
  • Tires - I have Black Again Haven't used it. I use PB's BnB.
  • Black plastic - I have Black Again PB's Trim restore works well. If the Black again works and you like the results that it gives you, then use it.
  • Rubber/seals - ??? I use 1Z Gummi Fledge.
  • Application tool - I have Eagle One foam application sponge Another personal preference item.

Maintenance
  • Duster - I have California Duster Some people swear by these, others say that they marr the paint.
  • QD - I have Meguiar's Quik Detailer QDs are another personal preference item. I have way too many of them. I like FK425, PB's Spray & Gloss and Optimum Instant Detailer.
  • Towels - I have generic Microfiber (Better MF needed?) See notes above about the scratch test. You want a plush MF for QDing. Something with a little more nap.

Interior
  • Dusting - I have Swiffer dusting towels
  • Vacuum - I have a central vac in the garage
  • Leather - I have Lexol Quick Wipes leather cleaner and conditioner
  • Vinyl - I have Vinylex Quick Wipes vinyl cleaner
  • Tools - ??? (need detailing brushes?)

Like I mentioned, so much of detailing is personal preference. A product that I love, you may not like. There are some that have a very good following though, so they are usually safe bets. If you already have some of this stuff, use it. If you like it, finish it. Then you can decide if you want to try something else, or just stick with the same thing. If it doesn't work well for you, then I would look for suggestions of an alternate product.

If you do not see a kit for something (like the 105/205) just contact your favorite seller (like Troy) and see what they can do. IIf you are buying all this at one shot, you should be able to negotiate something.

As blk45 says, a lot is personal preference. Most products can do the task.

Wheels & Tires
* Tire cleaner - I would get an all purpose cleaner too. With the right dilutions, it can be used on many surfaces (tires, interior plastics, carpeting)

Drying

* Drying cloth - Qty 2 Cobra Waffle Weave Microfiber - I Like the foam core versions better. They hold more water.

* Quick wax - I have Eagle One Wax-As-You-Dry - I would use a good gloss enhancing detailer. Maybe PB Spray and Gloss

Paint Cleaning

* Towels - I have generic microfiber (should I get better?). Get better

Paint Polish

* Polish - Meguiar's 105 & 205 - I like these.
* Pads - Lake Country 5.5" (need to determine CCS or flat, qty and colors) - I would recommend using the Meg's pads if you use 105/205. They worked more predictably for me.

Windows

* Cleaner - I have Eagle One 20/20 Perfect Vision. This stuffs works ok. Use the two towel method to clean.

Dressings

* Tires - I have Black Again. Use the PB BnB if you get it.
* Black plastic - I have Black Again, I like PB Trim Restorer and 303.
* Rubber/seals - I use a protectant like 303

Maintenance

* QD - I have Meguiar's Quik Detailer. Meg's is a good cleaning QD but not much gloss/slickness compared to others. It has a great misting sprayer. I like Mothers Showtime (more gloss, slickness, scent). PB's Spray and Wipe is a nice no gloss cleaner that can also be used as a waterless wash.

Get some nice mf towels. There are a lot of nice ones out there. I recommend short nap types of polish/wax removal and fluffier ones for use with QD's.

You can spend lots of cash and have a huge arsenal of products but why? Another member was talking about this and WHY do you need so much.I know I have been reading here and you can go crazy trying everything you read.I am sure if you keep things simple and spend the time you need in each step you will be amazed.Go with professional products from here and get a starter kit with your PC.It will give you most all you need to get the job done.Troy will have whatever add on's you need also.Check with the store you want to use for your purchase (CHECK THEM ALL) and compare the prices shipping costs and specials.

After all its your money be smart when ordering.

I am sure any retail store will be happy to take your first order but that's a BIGGGGGGG order.Remember You do not need a brush for lug nuts, the wheel face, the tires,A wheel brush and an old wash mit for the tires.I assume you are not 4 wheel in.:howdy

Okay guys, thank you for the detailed replies. I notice most everyone agrees on techniques, and there are personal preferences in products. I honestly have several browsers open, multiple Word documents, and an Excel spreadsheet as I'm doing my research and shopping list.

I'm basing my final list on a conglomeration of recommendations, trends I see in posts on the forums, using up what I already have (if applicable), and my lack of a budget. I'm considering every piece of advice everyone is giving me, so I'm going to feel bad when I choose something other than what one of you has suggested.

But once again, thank you and keep up the tips, advice and recommendations. I'm reading every word of it... usually multiple times!

Oh, and in regards to the PC polisher, other brands seem to be more expensive or not as widely used (exception being the Flex.) I did look for the new PC (7435 I think), but it looks like it won't be out for another month or more. I didn't want to wait that long to get one.

Hi Eric,
I did the same thing when I got here. I had so many doc and spread sheets open you would think that I was working on my masters.

One of the ways to save on cash till you build up your arsenal is to find things that you "need".
Look for products that have multiple uses. I use PB's NL for my interior as well as my trim, A good APC at different dilutions works well for cleaning many different surfaces.
This is where technique comes in. Experiment with what you have till you achieve the results that you want.
Start with the core items first and expand from there.

Great points jaybs02. I've mentioned this in several threads to newbiies.

For me ONR/DP Rinseless is my rinseless wash, my water conditioner, my QD, etc. My APC product is used to clean engines, tires and wheel arches (4:1), wheels and interior (10:1), carpets (10:1), etc.

On my two details this weekend, I would have paid a kings ransom for a good shop-vac. Mine is woeful. So I'll be using the profits from this weekend to buy a new one. And offering to re-do the interior of the cars I did this weekend.

I still think newbies should stick to one compound, 2 medium polishes, one finishing polish, one wax, and one sealant. Expand from there. The more I use different products, the more respect I gain for Poorboy's World products. Most of my arsenal will be shifting in that direction. There are still some go-to products I will keep from other manufacturers, but their lineup is cost effective and really delivers the results.

Hey, DM.

Great advice from the experts here.

Here's one minor point from another newbie: I have a lug nut brush that I bought at Advanced Auto. I think that AutoZone and maybe even WalMart carries them... $2 or $3. I don't use it on all wheels, but when I need it, seems that nothing else will work. Depends on the wheel style.

Also, IMHO, I would not spend any money on any "wipes" ... leather, vinyl, or otherwise. There are a lot of great products available for both purposes. When I got into detailing semi-seriously, I found that good quality vinyl cleaners and protectants were the areas where I personally experienced the most improvement over OTC products.

Happy shopping!

Thanks for the additional input. My goal is to use up what I already have as much as I can. Yes, that means my bottle of George Foreman's Knock Out But Tar and Grime cleaner is going to be my APC for a while. :crazy2:

But there are a few things I have I just should not be using anymore. Like my old ratty sheepskin and chamois which are probably my main culprits for marring and swirls. My Costco MF towels should probably not be used on the paint. And after looking up the MSDS for Meguair's Hot Rims, I won't touch it anymore. The previous owner of my BMW trashed the wheels with OTC wheel cleaners and now part of my restoration project for the car includes getting them powder coated because they look like crap right now.

However, there are just several things I don't have at all. Of course the biggest costs are going to be PC polisher, pads and polishes. I was up until 2AM last night pricing out my shopping list, which came to $550 with DC's sale! I will be working on the list a little more to reduce where I can.

Since you are working to reduce initial costs, I'll keep my comments limited to reductions.

Wheels & Tires
  • Wheel cleaner - P21S Gel (second choice Sonus R2000)
The P21S is a great product, but is most beneficial for wheels that are neglected. Assuming you are doing personal vehicles only, you can save this cost and use your car wash solution. If initial cleanup is an issue, try 1.5x soap dilution. I don't use leftover since I do my tires and wheels first I have a fresh bucket (dedicated to just tires/wheels/wells)
  • Tire cleaner - Poorboy's Bold N Bright
Though BnB has some cleaners, I would suggest that you clean with an APC and then a final wipe down w/BnB. Not extra cost or cost savings.
  • Wheel brush - Boar's Hair
Great tool, but pricey. I made my suggestion in the other wheel brush thread.
    ...
...
Wash

  • ...
  • Dirt trap - Grit Guard (really needed? Fit in the Homer Bucket?)
Save the price. I was on the fence myself, but after reading some posts that confirmed one of my suspicions, I hopped off. The unit may stay at the bottom of the bucket as intended or it may float up to undetermined levels in the bucket.
...
Paint Cleaning
  • Clay Bar - I have Clay Magic blue kit
  • Lubricant - I have lots of Meguiar's Quik Detailer
As noted above, the Clay Magic kit includes AM's #49 Body Shine which works fine as a clay lube and as a QD.
...
LSP

  • ...
  • Carnauba wax - Poorboy's Natty's Blue (or Red)
(Both or just one or the other?)
Since cost savings is an issue I would get one or the other.
Windows

  • ...
  • Towels - I have generic microfiber (better MF for windows?)
I would go to a local janitorial supply store and pick up a dozen blue huck towels. They work great (the tool of choice for many a professional window cleaner), reasonably priced, and very easy to keep from getting confused with your MF towels used for different purposes.
    ...
...
Interior

  • ...
  • Leather - I have Lexol Quick Wipes leather cleaner and conditioner
  • Vinyl - I have Vinylex Quick Wipes vinyl cleaner
You will save money in the long run by purchasing specific cleaners over these "wipes". The wipes often dry out before you use them up. The cleaners and towels do a better job (IMO). Environmentally speaking, you are not creating "trash" by throwing away a wipe....

Regarding your APC, IMO I would just keep the GF Knock Out for use in and around the home and purchase an APC that is "built" for automotive purposes. I am not familiar with the GF product, and it may be a great product, but if you use it around the house anyway it won't be like money wasted.

Yeah, I used to use the Lexol producs in a spray bottle. One winter I left them in my garage, and they froze. I bought the wipes to be able to detail quickly. Once I use them up, I will switch back to some form of liquid.

I've incorporated most of the cost savings into my new list. I've shaved ~$100 off the top. Now to PM Troy for a quote on my bulk order.

Well, I placed my order. Troy has been great and helped me out with my cart. I wound up gettig the following items to suplement the few things I already have. Now... to get it and start in on the cars!

PB's Wheel Sealant
Raggtopp care kit
Meg's Ultra Paint Correction Combo (#105/205)
PB's EX Sealant

Thanks for everyone's help and advice. Now... to actually figure out how the heck to use all this stuff. :passout:

Troy has been great and helped me out with my cart.
:bigups
That was the point of my thread about talking to your vendor. All the sponsors at DC are knowledgeable and more than willing to help decide on the correct product/products for your needs.
Time well spent so your money is well spent. :)

Well, I placed my order. Troy has been great and helped me out with my cart.

I knew Troy would take care of you.

You're very welcome.

Nice order! That should keep you busy for a while. Pics are mandatory! :D

Bah! I got my stuff a few weeks ago, but what seems like a month of rain, night classes, and busy weekends means I haven't had a chance to do anything yet! *cry*

Looks like im late on this post too but, I was wondering how things turned out, unless its been raining still for 4 months lol?
