Platinum on a Black Av--Pics

As Frank from "Everybody Loves Raymod" would say, "Holy crap!"

That's quite a shine!

Hmmm...with results like that on a black car (mine's silver), I'm wondering if I shouldn't be adding a few coats of Platinum instead of P21S.

Or maybe I'll go all out and add a few layers of Platinum and then a final layer of P21S.

Hmmm...

Beach - good luck with that buick - I hate buick paint, especially after its been abused for even a short time (2.5 years without a wash...... OWCH! If it has the little "alloy" rims you're gonna have to break out a toothbrush and some simple green) I can't get my wife's car (same color scheme, but hers is a 1998 that used to be my mom's car) to bead water decently with ANY product worth crap. So like I said, good luck for sure! :bounce

Oh, and about the Buick. I'm not really sure if it hasn't been washed since new, I think it's been done a few times, but not very often or with much care. Kind of like a few public car washes or something. The owner's a friend and said she used to have someone detail her cars years ago, she just hasn't had much time to get it done lately. I've seen the car quite often and it really isn't that bad, it just looks like it needs a good wash and a little polish.

I have 5 coats of Platinum on the Av. Just to show how little my father knows about proper auto care, he said to me "You shouldn't put any more of that stuff on there or you're going to have a big gooey mess." What! Even if it were pure wax (which I'm fairly sure it isn't), there's no way you'd get a "gooey" mess (whatever that meant!).

But really, I wonder if the Platinum is really formulated to be layered, and if so, wonder how much is too much. I really don't think I'll get any kind of problems (what the heck would a guy who's always used Turtle Wax know?!) if I add another coat or two after each weekly wash with the Platinum shampoo. You use so little, it's not costing very much and I like the idea of added shine, durability, and protection. I think I'll email the guy at 4starplatinum with a few questions.

Wish me luck with the Buick! She's dropping it off tomorrow morning and my mother's giving her a ride to work, so I'll have it all day. Hopefully, I won't die of heat stroke, with it supposed to be in the low 90's with rising humidity--my favorite (yeah, right!).

Yeah, I know! My prices are almost dirt cheap, but I use mostly all high-end, have to order it, stuff. Mainly, because it's a combo hobby/extra income maker right now, and because that's how I advertise myself. High end products and results at terrific prices. Give it a month or two, and maybe I'll come to my senses!

You could easily advertise decently 'high' prices and use higher end products as your selling point. Most of the detailers in my area use cheapo $1.00 a gallon Soap for the car, and no name brand wax w/the typical armor all interior. If your using items that cost 50 times more then that, advertise it and say it.

"I detail using only the best soaps, waxes, and cleaners available - Resulting in an unbeatable shine. Unlike competitors who use the cheapest available products that can actually be damaging to your vehicle's finish. Once I'm finished, your car will have a luster beyond what its ever had, even on the showroom floor."

Something like that I suppose, but I'm no marketing expert. :) What you probably should concentrate on is higher end clients, the wealthy, and charge detail fees accordingly. The average detail fee in my area, using crap stuff, is about $50.00. They use that $1.00/gallon no brand soap, and $3.00/tub no name wax. If your using high end components then I'm sure you could easily charge $150-$200/detail if you target the right clientele.

Just my thoughts. Print up flyers with your advertisements, make sure they are classy, and post them up at golf clubs, yacht clubs, etc - With their permisssion of course. :)

First off, because of your results with your Av., I ordered some Platinum to try. The comments about too much wax might have more truth to it than you think. I once had a black Lincoln Mark V that I stripped the wax off of yearly. In my opinion, the swirls that started to appear when in the right light were actually in the many layers of carnauba wax I had applied. Anyway, stripping and applying new wax seemed to be all that was necssary to have things look good again.

As an aside, I also think many of us use too much of all the things we detail with. I now use about 1/2 as much car shampoo as the manufacturer suggests and it seems the car rinses cleaner. Wax I apply very thin as well. As long as it show that something is going on the paint, that seems to be enough.

Any other thoughts on this?

That's a great idea about the detailing, and after today's first client, that's what I'll be doing!

Oh, and about layering Platinum and having too much. I emailed the guy at 4starplatinum and he told me that it is a polymer with no wax at all, and is specially formulated for enthusiasts who like to layer products for added depth and shine. With having 5 coats on now, I also asked if adding one coat a week after a wash would be okay, and it is.

Holy crap! The lady brought the 2000 Century over this morning at 8:15am, and I still was rushing at 4:00 this afternoon to get things done--with no breaks at all! Now I know what never washing your car for 2.5 years does to your paint! It still had a good gloss, but still wasn't slick even after 2-3 coats of Klasse AIO and then a coat of Platinum! Too bad I didn't have any clay to use or a PC (need to get one soon, my arms & hands are killing me, and it takes too long!) It did look a heck of a lot better though, and she paid me a little extra after seeing the car and my sunburn! Her car is the reason why my prices will be going up tonight!

Oh yeah, I have some pics of the Buick and they'll be up soon!
