Plastic Spacer Melted on Porter Cable?

I just bought and used my porter cable for my first detail over the weekend. Today I went to take off my backing plate and this is what I saw:

I had to work my wrench back and forth just to get it to bite onto the hex nut to pull the backing plate off. Was I supposed to remove this piece? It doesn't seem like its needed, as I still have the carbon fiber spacer between the backing plate and the hex nut to prevent the counterweight screws from hitting.



Here is the porter cable with the plastic piece off. Do you guys have it on or off?

on the backing plates there is a small plastic ring that is on top, and i've never had a problem with them melting/breaking, etc...
 
Hmm, I don't recall whether or not this black plastic spacer came with my porter cable or if it was on my backing plate. I do know that the porter cable came with what I think is a carbon fiber spacer with a diameter the same size as the hex nut. I put this carbon spacer over the threads of the backing plate before screwing it down into the hex nut.

if you look on top of the backing plates (for example, megs/LC) they have the round plastic ring on top...
 
I bought my PC so long ago that I can't exactly remember but I am fairly certain it came with a plastic type washer that was supposed to be removed prior to use.



Hopefully someone else can chime in and verify this.
 
This does not look like a spacer but some kind of plastic sleeve to protect the bearing assembly underneath from grime/ contamination etc. Some how it has worked its way up and made contact with the backing plate.
 
I just bought a PC and actually got it yesterday, and it did come with a washer. It was very hard but mine didn't seem to be plastic, more like a metal blend of some kind. I haven't used it yet but I wasn't sure if you HAD to use that washer or nobody really did? My 3.5" flex backing plate didn't hit anything without it, but I put it on anyway just in case.



edit** Mine looked like a regular thick washer, not like the one in the pic above, and my flex backing plate came only with a protective rubber cap on the end of the bolt.

I think you are correct, it defineitly seemed to work its way upward and had contact with the rotating plate. This was probably due to the vibration, I don't think my counterwieght is enough for my 7.5" pads.

Yes, my PC also came with this and is a completely different part than what I am showing here. I believe the washer you are referring to is made of carbon fiber and its the same diameter of the metal hex nut. I also noticed the backing plate didn't hit with it out but I put it on anyway just in case.



Can you do me a favor and take your backing plate off and look down at the metal hex nut, do you see any sort of black plastic ring around the groove pointed at in the picture below?
