those of you who have used by hand, do you use more or less product massaging in with clean fingers than a mf applicator?

I havent used this particular leather conditioner, but I do massage Lexol in by hand. I think I use slightly more product using this method, but its a good thing. Applying the conditioner by hand allows me to feel which spots are drier and soaking up more, allowing for a more thorough application in the end.
I also feel that I waste a good deal of conditioner in the applicator when I use one. My terry applicator normally becomes pretty saturated.
So, my preferred method is do it by hand and the amount of product used doesnt vary too much for me in either direction.
