PC shakes too much, promblem?

my PC shakes too severely at 5-6 speed.

is it broken?

It shakes so much that my hand will go numb from holding it.

is something loose maybe?



I bought almost two years ago, anyone ever send their's back for repair?
 
Unless this behavior is new, I'd say it's just the nature of the beast. It bothers some people more than others.



The vibration is one reason why some of us prefer the Cyclo ;)



I've had a PC rebuilt, IIRC it cost about $75 at the local Porter Cable dealer.
 
Centering the pad correctly will help, as will putting on the handle.

When centering the pad, don't use the loop material as a judge of center.

Use the entire pad to judge the center. I have noticed on a couple of my pads the white loop material is off center.

The correct counterbalance for the pad size makes a difference also.

In the "different strokes for different folks" category, I find that *not* using the side handle drastically reduces the vibration.



IIRC the theory has to do with the tangental transfer of energy pulses (i.e. "vibration") but I forget the exact terminology and the details :o

I've tried using both the handle and without, and without it definitely reduces the vibrations. My teeth started to chatter, and I became dizzy from the vibration that the handle produces.
 
well I've tried to different counterweights for my 6" pad and it shakes with both.



In the demonstration mpeg video (in the link below, "porter cable demo") the PC of the forum member spins smoothly and doesn't seem to jiggle severely like mine. as you can see there seem to be no vibration or shaking as he holds it against the door as he ratches it up to 5-6.

I guess I'll have to take it in for a rebuild. I have never really been able to get my polishes to buff out completely. I certainly expected to follow up with a MF towel but after watching the video I realize that my PC never really got the polishes to a somewhat transparent state like in the video. I sat there for 5 minutes at least before going to top speed 5 And it didn't disipitate.



Say you're working with a 12x12 area how long should it take to buff out a polish like SSR?







any suggestions on finding a PC place for a rebuild? Home Depot?
 
Yeah, the counterweights make for a very subtle difference at best.



In that video it looks to me like he's not applying much pressure and there are a few edits that make it hard to know how long he really worked it :nixweiss



I somehow suspect you might be using too much product but it's hard to say.



I still wonder if your PC is OK, but go ahead and get it rebuilt, you'll never know (and always wonder) until you do ;) The money will be well-spent if only for your peace of mind.



I'd just check the yellow pages for a PC service center, or see if there's something on a website. I took mine to the local independent dealer where all the construction guys get their PC tools serviced and they sent it out to who-knows-where.
 
I wouldn't say its broken. It just shakes that bad. My hand goes numb as well. I ramp that sucker to speed 6 and away we go! Just dont plan on feeling much afterword. :)

What pads and backing plate are you using?
 
I'm using the sonus pads and I have a 6" rigid backing plate. I used Poorboys ssr 2.5, two swirls around the pad per panel. How long should I have been overlapping at 4-5 before teh product starts to buff out?

Maybe im doing this wrong, but I was taught that you initially use one-two swirls to get the pad saturated, then after that only use a few pea sized drops, or one drop the size of a nickel

yeah that sounds right, since it wasn't buffing out (as I figured it should) I wouldn't add more SSR to the pad until it looked like the coating was too think on the next panel.

I also took MF towel and rubbed off excess from the pad.

I was using an orange Sonus pad with the SSR by the way.
