PC Pads

Just One More Coat
I have a De Walt orbital the backing plate is just over 5 inches. Most of the pads that I found the velcro pad is just under 5 inches. So the pads get eatten up around the edges or cut into the foam.
Does anyone have a pad that would fit this plate?

I do have pads that have the larger backing but then the pads surface is like 7 inches and it does not get the proper action

If I understand your problem correctly, the Meg's pads I use are 6.5" in diameter and the velcro measures about 5-1/8". My Meg's 5" backing plate measures about 4-7/8". With that 1/4" tolerance, I have not had any problems with tearing pads.
While I am just a hobby detailer, some of my pads have probably seen 15 - 20 uses. There again, the use is not too severe because the finish I am working with doesn't need anything stronger than Meg's #9 and Klasse AIO for polishing. I don't have to lean on the pads or abuse them in any way.

Thanks Charles

My backing plate is 5 3/4 inches. The pad that I was given are 6 1/2 inches the velrco is only 4 3/4 inches so you can see that the backing plate is cutting into the pads. Now I have some 7 1/2 inche pads the velcro pad is 6 inches those are in great shape no cuts. One thing that I have noticed is that they do not get that great of spin on the surface unless I lift the PC while using it. I'm wondering if there are pads that are closer to 6 1/2 pads that will work.

This might be trying to oversimplify, but can you buy pads from the manufacturer of the backing plate?
Or can you buy a backing plate from the manufacturer of the pads?
It seems like having both items from the same source would give you a better shot at having them match up.
The only reason mine work is because Meg's made a matched set. I sure didn't know what I was doing.

I'm using a 6" PC flexible backing plate (actually 5.75") I got from TOL for $14.95 with LC 6.5" pads (velcro backing is 5") & the LC 7.5" variable contact pads (velcro backing is 5.75").

I haven't noticed any foam degradation on the 6.5" pads & the 7.5" pads are a perfect fit, they almost center themselves on the 7.5" pad.

Interesting. I've seen the old SOnus pads with smaller velcro and all the backing plates ate em up. They expanded the velcro largely. Best bet is to follow the manufacturer and get the same kits. Flexible allows you to go over curves and have the pad bend. Rigid is flat all the time so you have to make different passes.

I just used a PC 7336 for the first time & loved it but I can't really answer why to use a flexible backing plate other than it contributes to successful efforts by noobies like me & everyone recommends them.

A veteran detailer will maintain horizontal surface contact through experience, only tilting the buffer when they want to work a particular portion of the surface, and this gives me some margin for error when I inadvertently tip the buffer, even with a user-friendly machine like the PC.

Using a flexible backing plate along with the new LC Constant Pressure pads will probably make the PC even more idiot-proof but I haven't tried them yet.

You probably want to save the LC Constant Pressure pads for that rotary. You know the one with the bolt problem:lmfao

I found out the the old rotary is a WEN product. I contacted WEN & they have a 7" velcro flexible backing plate that'll attach to the rotary without modification.

I was thinking of trying some of the LC Constant Pressure pads with the rotary and perhaps trying one of the LC tufted "finger" foam pads that ScottP is selling at specialtymotoring.

Supposed to be quite a bit safer than using a wool pad & I'm going to try the pads I end up buying on my Dad's car which is in desperate need of detailing.

bigron,
You should post that question as a new thread. We have begun shipping the new shorter adapters and have had great feed back. Even today there was a post about it

I still think that a new thread would be best to get the word out and alleviate your apprehension about the product.

thank you for the response aaron . im going to go for it . i dont like using the big pads on my pc because it wastes product and its tough to get tight spots like roof post and small fenders ect . i discovered that the rotary pads i got for my rotary prior to switching to edge 2000 are P&S pads made by you for P&S. keep up the good work and my rotary skills are coming right along . check the panel for excessive heat and keep a squirt bottle full of water handy when product starts caking .. best advice i got on rotary use .. thanks again .. from a satisfied customer ..
