PC operating systems

Not sure myself. I saw the deals on the Vostro's. Couldn't quite figure them out. My guess is that there just refurbished Dimension models. For $399 I can't really see them NOT being refurbs.

As far as your question goes, I would stick with XP. I doubt you'll be able to run Vista smoothly with the specs I have seen this cheap computers come with. My friend isn't able to run Vista smoothly with one gig of ram.

Just because a machine has the Vista Ready logo on it by no means is it going to be a pleasant experience especially on an entry level machine.

According to Microsoft themselves:

"The Windows Vista Capable program does not represent minimum hardware requirements for the different versions of Windows Vista – we look forward to providing additional information regarding minimum hardware requirements for Windows Vista and the Windows Vista logo program in the coming months."

Here is Microsoft's Hardware Recommendations for Vista - Keep in mind these are minimums.

Windows Vista: Recommended System Requirements

I didn't do it on purpose but my Dell Inspiron 1520 does meet Microsoft's minimum requirements to run all the features of all versions of Vista. I spent $877 on it but I had it configured with XP instead as I know the machine will be much more usable for me.

Patrick, if you want a laptop at a retail location I suggest a Fujitsu Siemens brand. One of the best built laptop in quality and alike.

I run both Vista and XP for work related issue and persoanally I prefer XP Pro. Vista has too many annonying issues and hogs up too much resource. However, on just about any new PC they will come with Vista, so you may have to rebuild it with XP.

If you do get Vista, go with Vista Premium or Business edition.

Good luck with your PC choice.

I just pulled the trigger on a Vostro 1500 with XP.

XP is stable and is the preferred operating system for ATM's for that reason.

What was the damage lag? I missed out on the $399.00 deal......I definitely want to stick with XP though.....And those Fujitsus are an awesome machine.....
