Paying Employees

I could easily boost an employees pay by $2 an hour if they switched to IC but lie you said they would lose a lot of benefits.

Exactly, and I think that's what we try and avoid here in Canada. I can understand to an extent, since our health care is public and such. From an employee's viewpoint, I'd rather have the benefits than the extra cash.

I don't think it's a big deal as long as it's agreed upon before employment

I wouldn't mind trying this, since I've had employees break equipment in the past.

We've never had much of an issue with breaking equipment but we did have an employee run a car into another car out back of the shop about 15 years ago. It was 100% his fault and caused $500 damage to the rear bumper of a car and we ended up buying the car he was driving off the wholesaler we were detailing it for because it was cheaper to do so than to fix the damage (I think it was a $600 car). Employee immediately agreed to pay the damages to both cars but we said as long as he agreed to pay for the damage to the bumper of the other car we would chalk it up to a mistake being made and not let him go which he agreed to in writing. Within 2 weeks the guy was gone, a labour board complaint was made demanding his pay with no deductions and that was that. Labour board actually sided with us and we ended up suing him in small claims for the money and won although couldn't collect it because the guy was a deadbeat and since us cannot hold a job. I still occasionally google his name to see if I can locate him as the $750 judgement we won is still valid and has been accruing interest ever since.

The labour board ruled in YOUR favour ? You got a friend on the board or something ??? lol, you never hear of the board ruling in favour of an employer. I had an employee run a shampooer (a cheaper one) without letting solution out, for about 10min, burned out the pump because it didn't have a pressure relief system. Had another employee break a compressor by thinking it needed an oil change, and then forgot to put new oil in.

Dude I won a case against the Ontario Human Rights Commission filed by a former employee which is REALLY rare. Pray to God you never have to go through that BS - they can literally sink your business and it's not even a real legal body but their decisions are legally binding!
