Painters tape for a short road trip?

I've used the blue tape to do a little painting on some buddies car. I had just recently waxed with regular Natty's and the darn tape wouldn't stick to the slick finish! So that would be my only concern, getting it to stick. Good luck!

Hmmm. Have to go to Baltimore for friend's wedding. Approx. 4 hrs each way. I hate washing bugs off after a road trip. This might be perfect.

I will be heading out shortly, I will post my experience using 3M tape.

Thanks to all who took time to respond to my questions,

Rgds

To revive an old thread. I tape up the mirrors on our mini van for out 27 hour trip from L.A. to Little Rock. It holds on through the heat, rain, wind, bugs and comes off with no residue left behind. The nose mask takes care of everything else.

There is more than one version of the 3M blue tape. I've run across a "delicate surface" version at one of the local SoCal hardware chains, OSH or Orchard Supply Hardware.

I have used blue painers tape, medium strenght, and I always have to clay it after to remove all the residue.

What am I doing wrong? I always have a good coat of wax on my car as well and it is not on there for more than a day.

Where can you buy low strength blue painters tape, I can only find medium in my area, anywhere online?

I seriously don't know how this could vary, as many on here say it leaves nothing behind???? ***

Just got some for my uncle. He's getting ready to leave on a 2000 mile trip. Hopefully I can give a second hand report soon.

Blue 3M "delicate/orange" painter's tape FOR THE WIN

Just two weeks ago to visit my old Army buddy for his wedding:

I'm still thinking that those that are getting glue left behind got a bad batch of tape. I'm not experiencing this with tape sitting on the car in the sun. I've tried an older tape and the newer thinner tape.

I know this may sound crazy but it works, the guys in the middle east use this method aswell when they do long trips. They take dishwashing soap and soap up the front end and just drive. The sand and other crap automatically clings to the soap forming a layer outer layer that washes right off. I did the same thing once with shampoo also

I don't understand? You are wanting dirt to cling to the paint?

Griot's Garages sell this saran wrap type cover that comes in a roll. It's like a big clear bra, but it just doesn't look as good. If you have a problem with the way blue painters tape looks, this is a really good alternative.

Guys, did anyone ever try this spray-on DupliColor product called SHIELD? I'm heading on a road trip soon and trying to evaluate my various options. Thanks for any feedback.

Shield

I was also intrigued with TransitShield, but you can't find any products listed at their website...it's kind of odd.

OK, I found a few comments on the DupliColor stuff...people say it's utter rubbish.

I guess I'm going to contact this Transit Shield company to find out if they're still business.

My uncle just got home from a long road trip, and used the Shield I had gotten him once. When he had it detailed, the guys working on it asked him what was on it because they were having a hard time scrubbing it off.

His take was that it did it's job and caught the bugs and a lot of crap, but seemed to be harder getting off than they advertised. He did admit that, with only using it once, he may have applied it a little too thick.

umm why is this thread still open , everyone agrees on the same solution

3M painters tape ( i love the delicate stuff) is really the best and only answer
