Hello everyone..i have a unique one here...I own a Silver Volvo and recently I have noticed that the strips of painted plastic molding along the passenger side doors have like scratches in them..not one or two..but many, to where is looks as if though it is fading? I went to the dealer this morning and he said that they looked like scratches and that he could not do anything about it. Its seems what ever it is..it is UNDER the clearcoat...which is weird?...I CANT feel them with my fingernail?..or at all for that matter?..I use AIO/SG religiously?...I use MF towels to wash..Never used a PC or rotary..and to top it off why aren't all the other painted plastic components doing this?...I am having a Volvo rep look at it this month...So waiting to hear back from dealer this week...Any ideas...Maybe it is a paint flaw?....How can I tell?...Try SMR perhaps?..It seems to be getting progressively worse?...I have no idea..I think Volvo may screw me on this...so much for the factory painted components on a $34k car...Any advice to address these supposed scratches?...sorry so long-winded...Thanks all..Lance

Might they have sustained impacts that might have cracked the paint? As in the plastic flexes and the paint doesn't?

If it's really something happening UNDER the clear, then the SMR won't do anything for you. Maybe give it a try to find out (don't get too aggressive, even with "just" SMR).

I wouldn't be too surprised if it DOES turn out to be some kind of defect. I wouldn't be TOO optimistic about Volvo fixing it either..

If this problem is only on one piece of trim, and all the other trim pieces are identical to it and they don't show the same problem, then it likely is a defect of some kind. Your car is 3 yrs old, is it still under the full factory warranty? This will probably be the determining factor in whether or not you'll have to pay for it.

Have you looked at this using a magnifying glass? Sometimes these problems look different under closer examination.

I am thinking along the same lines as Acumulator. You're talking about the strips to protect your doors from other people's doors, right? Maybe someone hit yours, and the plastic underneath flexed, but the paint didn't. If that is the case, maybe Volvo didn't add a flex agent to the paint, but did to the clear (since it may not be cracking). Worth checking with Volvo about, especially if it is still under a bumper-bumper warranty.
