Paint Thickness gauge

What brand of paint thickness gauge do you guys use ? ? Looking for info on these as far as what features to look for ,which ones to avoid, price range etc. I've seen them on the internet from $59.00 to $500,00 plus. This mostly would be for my personal use to satisfy my own curiosity and keep me out of trouble when trying a little wet sanding on family and friends projects. :driving:

Cen-Tech ? ?

Thanks Angelo. Has anybody ever used a Cen-Tech ? Price is low enough and the seller has a good reputation.

They work very well for one's personal use, try Harbor Freight because they sell it at some locations maybe for a better price.

I bought the harbor freight model a couple weeks ago. Seems to work OK. I would like to compare it with a higher end model to see how it compares. The price was right.

I haven't really looked into if PAC carries any at all .But a low priced one suggested by Angelo to look at maybe a good addition to PAC line of detailing tools. Then we could get some usefull reviews

Thanks gents for the information - I had not had time to look these up but have also been intending on getting one for the same reasons.

I have only seen the DelFelsko (sp?) unit at another detailing site and it is like $700 bucks I think - yikes !

I will also keep looking around and see what choices are out there.

Imagine the main things I want it to do are -

Work on any metal surface
Work on fiberglass
Hopefully work on other surfaces such as wood, etc.
Can be calibrated to be as close to perfect readings as possible
Last a very long time
Have a place to send it to if it needs repair, etc..

Am I missing anything else?

Geez its hard to type with stitches in your dang hand!!! :(

DanF,

Visit DeFelsko.com and click the "Technology Center" link on the left hand side. The next page, choose under Technical Library - Coating Thickness Measurement. There you will find a plethora of information that might help you decide on your purchase.

Finding one unit that will perform all the tests you mentioned may not be available at a reasonable cost. I have heard positive things about the unit mentioned by rwisejr.

I think if you really need one for fiberglass then you are looking to spend big coin.
