Paint hardness...rate them.

Glasurit is one of a FEW lines of paint that BASF makes. With few exceptions, I don't think you're going to have too much luck figuring out most manufacturer's paint suppliers... It could even be different between plants, years and models... In general, though I think we can make some assumptions like Audi is hard, Honda is soft... Otherwise we're talking relativity and anecdotal experiences...

My BMW paint is pretty hard. Almost up there with Audi.

GM paint quality (on the denali/most GM's) is super super super soft!

I took some 83 to the back of the denali. It had orange peal, then when I was done with it, had none...eek!

Most new Ford Europe specials ie Ford racing Puma, Focus Rs even the older escort cosworth are really soft paint especially the imperial blue.

Interesting. When I did the '05 rent-a-Suburban I had to use the rotary and PI-III RC. Barely removed the majority of the marring, let alone the OP! After being used to the Audis I was expecting the Suburban to be a piece of cake, thought I could do it with just the Cyclo. THAT idea didn't last long :o

I would've figured that Porsche/Audi/VW would all have the same paint, but then somebody recently posted that their '03 VW seemed to have *soft* clear :nixweiss

Could be an "eye of the beholder" type of thing, and IMO we oughta base "hardness" on what it takes to correct it, not perceived vulnerability to marring.

Compared to the Audis and the lacquer on the Jag, everything else I work on seems "middle of the road", but that's a pretty wide road ;)

Hey Accumulator that was me with the 03 VW. I based my evaluation on the fact I can remove swirls easily without a lot of work and that I have to use a finishing pad to clear up the paint after using a polishing pad. With most cars, even black I can use a polishing pad to clear up the finish but not the VW it just micro-mars with a polishing pad regardless of which polish I use.

Don't really know about my VW since I have not had it long enough, but my 98 e36 bmw had a very hard clear, took alot of time with my pc to get it to look better

Thanks for posting that. Yeah, that's *completely* different from Audis, which take *forever* to correct and never really need a finishing pad.

Interesting that people with VWs are having different experiences, just like with the GMs.
