Paint hardness and finish..

What is really meant by hard/soft?

My understanding is that soft paint is easy mar, but also easy to correct (with hard being the opposite).

If my understanding is correct, I'm suprised by BMW's black being classified as soft. I worked on a black 740il last weekend and it was a b*tch and a half (still not happy with its looks). The weekend before that, however, I worked on our family's black 911 and it really was extremely smooth sailing...

Sometimes you get paints that are the worst of both worlds... hard to knock stuff out but nigh impossible to finish down nicely. That said,

MB Cerami - x-hard

BMW - moderate

BMW jet black - x-soft

Honda - x-soft

Audi - hard

Toyota - m-hard

Extra soft on the Honda paint simply isn't true. Honda paint is not even near being in the same league as the BMW Stupid Softâ„¢ paint.:D

which paint is hard to finish off nicely?

The problem with nailing down this kind of thing is that what's hard or soft in many cases will be subjective. For instance, I own 3 Honda products and they all have soft paint. I care for a few more and their paints are all harder than mine. Some will lump the BMW jet black in with Honda paint and it's just leagues apart. What's normal to me is going to be hard/soft to someone else.

My 2 pennies.....
