Paint Decontamination

Accum,

How often do you decontaminate your car(s)? I have an 8 1/2 year old Eclipse that has been detailed (washed/clayed/paint cleansed/polished/AIO'ed/Sealed) once, last October. Could my car use a decontamination?

I've never fully decontaminated one more than once, never had the need to. But that's just *me* and even my most neglected beaters are mighty pampered. Once I get something nice it simply stays that way...more so than I'd expect most people could pull off (nah, I'm not braggin'... I'm retired with great facilities and a scad of vehicles to rotate between so it's easy to keep 'em nice).

I have used the first (alkaline) step as a super-wash before doing a full detail. It's a nice quick way to start with a clean slate.

I can't say if your Eclipse needs a (full) decon, but I bet the answer is "no". If you have recurring rust blooms (they come back after you clay them away) or some hideous contamination (mineral deposits, fallout, nasty sap, something pretty awful), then yeah, I'd do it, but otherwise no. It's the second, acidic step that I guess I'd shy away from unless it's really necessary.

Is it AutoInt A product you say is good from stripping your old wax/sealant off before doing a full detail?

I have also been doing dcon research

On the topic of frequency I was told the following

I found I went through the gallons of ABc (well, the A and B..) pretty fast even though I'm not a pro. But I can understand your concern about the quantities and maybe that alone would make the FK system better for you.

I am a little confused her. If you never decontaminate a car more than once how did you go through the gallons of A and B pretty quick? Do you own a fleet of cars? :)

Yeah, that's right. It's like a super-shampoo. It's a bit harsh but I don't *think* it'll cause any problems. Be careful mixing it up- too much water pressure and you'll get all suds.

I dunno how good the FK stuff is as I haven't tried it yet (I have some for the upcoming A8 project but that won't happen for a while). I hear the FK stuff smells *AWFUL*, as in, throw-away-the-mitt awful.

Well, I wouldn't call it a "fleet" but I currently have.. uhm..(counting)..nine at present :o Heh heh, I sorta just "accumulate" them ;) but I'm gonna sell the Blazer (buyer is getting anxious) and probably the M3 too so it's not like I always have that many.

I use "A" now and then for the "clean slate" thing but I don't consider that a true decontamination. To me, a full decontamination takes both the alkaline *and* acidic steps.

It's that acidic "B" that you can go through quickly; doing the bigger vehicles can take a lot of "B". Note that you don't dilute/mix "B", but rather use it straight, and you need to keep the vehicle wet with it.

 Well, now I know how you got your member name. I assumed it meant you were an accumulator of detailing supplies. You must have a rather LARGE garage. Your Ohio Personal Property Tax bill is probably rather large.

Do you just pour B on your wash mitt and wipe it on your paint?

Heh heh, never large enough...the Jag is stashed at my mechanic's shop until I clear out some room and the latest project car is parked in the driveway until I get rid of the M3.

And yeah, IMO *all* my taxes are pretty steep :furious:

Yeah. I put it in a squeeze bottle to make the process a little easier. I try to keep it off everything except the paint, at least as best I can.
