Paint advice for a newbie!

Hey everyone, hows it going? first post so go easy on me haha.:)
Any and all advice is appreciated

My car-06 BMW 5series Black sapphire metallic

Products-Chemical Guys V-Line, Chem. Hex pads. and a HF Rotary (I know..prolly not the best tool but college is expensive-_-)

So the paint on my car has not been taken care of (previous owner) and I wanted to try and fix it before I get it wrapped. The paint is the worst on the the hood so I figured I’d start there. In the recent week I have washed and clayed the car and have started to begin some paint correction steps. So I start with V36 and an orange pad and begin to see improvements on the corner of the hood where I started (the majority of the “micro scratches” are near the middle). As I move to the middle I still see the scratches, so I switch to v32 with a yellow pad and barely anything has changed. I figure anything is better than these scratches so I run out and buy some 2000 and 2500 grit sandpaper and and am going to see if wet-sanding gets them out but before I do that I wanted to get a few opinions from fellow people on the internet.:ph34r:

Yea its pretty bad and know that you guys aren’t miracle workers (or are you?:hmmm:) but any tips will be well appreciated!

It looks like you may have clear coat failure or something on that very damaged part of the hood

That's not scratches, it's cc failure. Nothing short of a repaint will cure it.

You can mask it some with black hole x2 and natty's blue wax paste x2, but you'll still be able to see it, just not as bad.

I'll see if I can find pics of a car that I did with the above.

I would advise to not sand anything on this car...
Certainly if you sand the clear coat failed hood, it will get worse...
Like Ron above said, its time to repaint that hood..

Perhaps other panels are looking like that too?

I have never seen clear coat failure on a relatively new Bimmer - guess they must have buffed it way too much a long time ago, thinning out the clearcoat, and then perhaps, the weather outside combined to start the crows feet look there..
Or, it was a very bad Repaint sometime ago, and now its failing...

It will not stop doing this, sorry..

As Ron above has stated and shown you with Pics, you can - temporarily - cover it with products, but they are not going to last, and the damage will continue to spread..

Wrapping anything on your vehicle should be off the table until you can get a handle on the rest of your paintwork, if you want to do this right...

Thanks for the pics ronkh, I'll go ahead and try to wet sand it but by the looks of it the paint is to far gone. I didn't have high hopes for it anyways lol.

Just saw your post Dan and will save my sandpaper for something else haha. The hood has the worst of it, and the car did spend its beginning years in the winters of New Jersey and then the summers of Florida. No worries Dan, worst come to worst I'll plasti dip it lol

Glad you've decided to skip the wetsanding (which would've just made things worse in this case anyhow). Heh heh, 99.999% of the time, when somebody who's never done it before mentions it, the correct suggestion is "just don't do it" for myriad reasons and I'm *NOT* in any way condescending to you when I say that.

There's often still a lot you can do to make things better. My '93 Audi has clearcoat failure in a few places yet still looks swell to anybody who's not a fanatic about this stuff.

Is that "white-appearing stuff" in the pix oxidation or is it polish residue in the compromised paint? Whatever it is, I'd try to clean that up chemically rather than mechanically/abrasively both for improved appearance and so you can better see what's going on. A good Paint Cleaner should work OK but don't let it dry before you buff it off lest it cause more "residue stuck in the paint" problems.

If repainting the area(s) in question isn't feasible, I'd use a leaves-stuff-behind polish like M09 but I'd wipe it off before it dries to avoid the "white residue" issue (that'll minimize the stuff it "leaves behind" while still letting you get a little benefit from it). Then top with a wax/sealant/coating, again avoiding the "white residue". That shouldn't be an issue with a coating, but with waxes and sealants it can be as man products "dry white". There are products that simply don't do that (Wipe-On-Walk-Away products, maybe somebody else here can school you on them) or you can buff off a conventional wax/sealant before it dries (the Wipe-on-Wipe-Off method).

I intentionally didn't mention more modern products than M09 as M09 contains the same Trade Secret Oils as M07 and it does a fair bit of concealing.

While it's easy for me to spend your money, what about simply having some paintwork done? Heh heh, at the risk of sounding Elitist (of which I'm generally guilty anyhow..), I'd sure hate to think of a '06 BMW with PlastiDip on it so I trust you were joking about that (if not, please don't tell me ;) ).

Once you've done whatever you're gonna do, try to keep it out of the sun to avoid UV exposure, and use something like Meguiar's Ultimate Qwik Wax when you dry it off after a wash.

I think the white stuff is the polish residue and by the looks of it, I'm gonna be saving up for a new paint job-_- haha.
I was certainly kidding about the Plastidip but their new autoflex coating is intriguing lol.

rooshp- Glad to hear you were joking about the PlastiDip..heh heh, I've seen so many, uhm...different....uses for the stuff on cars that I never know whether it's a joke any more!
