Oxidized Paint Help?

Newbie here, so I dont know if this is where it should go... I just bought this car and it seems to have some oxidized paint(I think?). I don't see any CC pealing or anything, so I'm hoping it's oxidized and not faded... I really dont know anything about paint care and people suggested 'rubbing compound' for it, which I got some Turtles Wax Rubbing Compound.

(wow those pictures make it look a lot worse than in person)

The color is a dark purpleish(ford calls it 'midnight red'), so you can see the difference. I know the trunk was recently repainted, so that could obviously make it stand out more.

What can be done to fix this?? Is it possible(especially for a detailing newb)? I think I could get a PC from someone, should I get that and try the Turtle Wax compound? Or is that to abrasive?

Thankss

Throw away that TW Compound. I never liked the stuff. I would start off using a good chemical polish and see how that does.

While I've seen miracles in faded red paints I don't think you can restore that to its original color...but if it improves a little bit it is still worth it. At least it will be better :p

I would start with something like Optimum Compound/HyperCompound and work your way up to the polish from there.

Start with a small section (hood, roof, etc) and see what begins to work for you. PC is a good start, although a rotary might help you out a bit more. Don't be afraid of the PC and burning the paint and use speed 5-6.

Good luck.

OP: If you're serious about recovering that finish, I'll suggest turning to a professional and let them do it. You won't be able to afford all the products and gear required to revive the dead.

Look at it this way: It could be dramatic if you hire someone that knows what they're doing and follows the correct process!!

Ok, thanks - I was going to ask if thsi would be best for a professional.

Anyone have any suggestions for someone in SE Michigan area?

What does it mean when some 'color' rubs off onto the pad when I tried to put a bit of carnauba on it? Would this point to it being through the CC or is that from oxidization? There wasnt that much con the pad, though.

Man - This paint has to be able to be fixed... When I whipe a wet towel on part of the 'faded' areas the paint looks exactly like the rest of the paint. Does this mean anything or no? haha

**Please note the following fact:

The LT quarter and roof have been re-painted before with a very poor quality paint. The rest of the car is the way the car should look over time without proper car. I'll bet a place like Maaco did it and used their single stage formula and that's why paint color is coming off. That car is clear coated from Ford. Good luck restoring it and keeping it looking good -it's needs a re-paint. If I was still in Michigan, I'd love to wet sand it and see what happens.

Well, if you think that's the cause of the paint, why would they have to repaint only the roof & quarter panels? I also believe that one of the rear doors is faded similiar to the roof/qt panels. The trunk was recently repainted by the last owner, so that could have been faded too. What would cause someone to only paint those spots, though? I'm gonna get some more pics up of it.

Sorry for the double post, but I was just checking out the paint and... The TOP coat of paint(faded) is peeling in the creases of the body panels. I could take pieces of it off and see nice, non-faded paint beneath. Does oxidized paint actually come off, or is this a shoddy paint job that didnt even sand the old paint?

The vehicle could have been involved in an accident on the RT 1/4 and/or RT RR door. That could explain why those panels along with the roof and LT 1/4 got repainted too. The trunk was probably from an entirely different incident.

Yeah, i forgot to say the trunk was just repainted because the spoiler came off in a carwash or something. Would a maaco place actually leave the old paint on? I can see non-faded(same color) paint where the faded-crappy paint has peeled in a few spots.

Well, I'm short on cash and dont think I'll be able to get a pro to do this. I'm also not looking for a show car - it's a daily driver, but I'd like it to look nice. I can get a wheel from my uncle, I think I'll atleast try some rubbing compound. If that doesnt work I'll go for the chemical polish(hyper compound). And if I'm not discouraged yet and that doesnt work maybe wet sanding would be the next step?????
