One reason I have never tried Zaino was due to the fact I got so tired of hearing the overzealous people brag about it. To this day, I havent tried it but........... times may be changing.....I just may have to see what its all about If people would truely be honest, and polite, we'd all be better off, but there's snowballs chance in Haiti of that happening....

..and also just so true! Although I have used Zaino in the past, the almost religous fervor that gets built up around it can be off-putting. For beginners that start out with it based off a recommendation, then plug it as though it's the holy grail without having previously tried any other quality car care products...all you can do is scratch your head.

I'm also reminded of the guy on the BMW board that was going to town on his new M5 with a rotary and recommending this to anyone and everyone regardless of their experience level. Members there just ate it up and his big defense was that "technology has changed, folks!"...um, yeah whatever.

Pat I'll provide products but let's do it while it's slow.

Im a moderater on grandamgt.com, one of my sections is the detailing section.

I dont push any product, my rule is to use what works for *you*.

I also DO NOT tolerate any member bashing another for using certain products.

I can vouch for coupe.

The only other site I regularly visit, Off Topic, I've moderated the detailing forum there for 5 years now.

They have content? I go there for the pics...:D

I was the same way Patrick but I finally tried some from a friend and it looked so good I placed a big order. I think some mistake the enthusiasm for Zaino as zealotry. There are some fanatics for Apple as well but they also make an excellent product.

As for forums, I think we learned from one forum this week that being too close to sponsors and detailing stores can easily lead to some closed discussions. Sometimes literally. :D

I think there is some psychology involved here. Some people like to follow leaders and each forum has some knowledgeable folks. For myself I like to experience as many products as possible and form my own conclusions. I used to like DACP based on comments from Mike Philips and others but with experience I saw it has some real weaknesses.

I like the saying one of the members has that goes "the experienced person is not at the mercy of another man's opinion."

If I remember right, agentf1 and ZaneO are both members here and at CorvetteForum. The car detailing section there has a lot of odd debates, like Rejex vs. Zaino, and there is not enough focus on process compared to products.

I resemble that remark...........actually I believe a little "fuzzy" thing delected my post before it was up long.

Maybe T will see that his mods are running off business.

Is offtopic part of this forum?

No, it is its own site. It began as the off topic forum of honda-acura.net and was spun off into its own site in 2000. Huge forum.

Lee-I go there for the afterhours forum. ;)

I've written some "how to's" for a couple forums, mostly forums whose cars I own (g35driver.com, e90post.com). I am a detailing forum mod at clublexus, but it's not a super busy forum and the other mod (dan) is really a wealth of knowledge. I show up at other forums but mostly stick to the Canada section. :)

I rarely recommend products, like most of you guys I try to emphasize process.

Here are copies of a couple of posts on other forums. The first post was "How do I remove swirl marks?"

Ugh.

Quote:If you wax alot [as stated] then you have a signifigant build up and should buy a wax remover. [mothers/maguires make pretty good "pre-wax cleaners"]

Of course no waxing in the sun or extreme humidity [ notice the little clumps of wax on your polish rag during high humidity?] and then go with one or two light coats of wax, by hand. Maybe its time to try a new brand, go with liquid instead of paste or whatever. After stripping the old stuff now the first coat of wax will be stubborn to apply and remove.

In the day when black cars had swirls you could spray a very fine mist of lukewarm water over the area, wipe with a clean rag in a back/forth straight line as opposed to circular motions. This works, heck even breathing heavily onto the affected area, creating a fog on the swirl, then wiping it will remove the swirl.

Way way back in the day we would put some kerosene in a misting bottle, spray a panel and wipe right away. This removed ALL wax and road crap. Then waxed with whatever quality wax you like. Use all obvious necessary precautions here, no confined spaces, only do a small section at time etc. This is a limo cleaning trick! I find Liquid Glass works real well here and a second coat of a nice liquid, Mothers/Maguires, Turtle wax ICE etc.

And lastly, yes I can go on too long, I find the new micro fiber polishing cloths really help to eliminate the swirl marks. Turn them often, use lots and they are machine washable!!

Have fun..........................

PS, of yah, the this assumes the swirl marks are on the surface, in the clearcoat, as opposed to burnt into the paint from a buffer. Thats a whole other area.

And another:

With modern polishes the wheel is an antique that can only scratch and smear the paint. To De wax just use tide to wash it or anyother strong detergent. My wifes black Chevy looks good with simple polish and a polymer wax like liquid.I apply it with a soft damp cloth and wipe the excess with a blue folded paper shop towel.Won't scratch and is quite easy.

----

These are the kind I have to reply to in some way. I hate making people look ignorant, but I also don't want this guy to be washing with tide, cleaning with Kerosene and removing his wax with blue shop towels. :hairpull

Oh, come on! That guy is CLEARLY an expert, after all, he's been doing it since "back in the day"!

Wait. What?

No Tide and no kerosene? Nooooo!

Of course not, everybody knows you use kerosene only after 50/50 rubdown with white phosphorus and magnesium powder and his swirls were not deep enough to call for that.
