ordered up porter cable and products, advice before the big day?

This i my first post so im not gonna waste to much time introducing myself. Ive been hand waxing cars for about 2 years (business and personal), not to long ago i discovered this site and svtperformances deatiling section. From there i got into much better products from specialtymotoring than my local auto store, mainly micro fiber stuff and some red moose machine glaze (and i learned how to lcay bar). Anyways i finally got around to getting a porter cable to use on my 04 lightning truck. I picked it up from tropi-care with 3 pads, orange yellow and black, 2 bonnets and a backing plate for about $150. From specialty motoring i got some poorboys ssr2 swirl remover, ex sealant, nattys blue paste wax, some more poorboys s and g and i got some left over red moose machine glaze. Basically though this sunday im planning on working on the truck all day ( i can do this outside correct?) Anyways heres my process so far.



1.wash truck with dawn soap

2.clay bar

3. wash with poorboys sss

4. dry with my mf waffle weave towel

5. apply ssr 2 (possibly use my tougher pad on a scratch or 2 i have?)

6. apply ex sealant 2 coats? (truck sleeps outside in flordia)

7. apply clearkotes red moose machine glaze (btw my truck is red)

8. apply 2 coats of nattys blue

9. possibly use some poorboys s and g to top it all off, or after the ssr 2 (i dunno why but i think i read about it somewhere)







ANY input and advice are appreciated, im looking foward to it. Ill def post before and afterpics. The truck isnt to bad right now but it does have some light swirling. TIA
 
The fist thing your gonna hear from anyone is likely to be not to use dish soap on a vehicle and while I must admit I'm not familiar with all those products. It looks like you may want to reconsider the order your thinking about. To the best of my limited knowledge glazes are basically fillers wich you should use following polishing and/or compounding also since the main purpose of a sealant is longevity I would put that on as one of the last steps assuming the sealant is layerable.Also that seems like alot of layers and products you may be better served washing w/ a good soap,clay bar, rinse well dry polish,apply a couple coats of wax,and then sealant if you choose to add additional products beyond that I seriously doubt you'd ever notice a differance. I'd probably skip the sealant and just plan on adding an extra coat of wax once a month or so assuming you have time, if not or if your a chronic procrastinator like me just add the sealant and call it a day
 
I would do step 7 before step 6 .. bascially applying the sealant after RMG



other advice, would be to take your time and give yourself a lot of time..

Don't bother using Dawn. You don't need to use it before a complete detail. It will be removed in the process.



Don't use RMG after a sealant. RMG contains cleaners and light abrasives, and therefore would remove your EX.



Hold off on the S&G until the next day IMO. I think the wax will hold up the best if you leave it alone for a day.

Yes you could use S&G after using the SSR2, but it would mainly be for removing dust or stubborn product. It could possibly help to slicken the surface a little more, and make the application of EX easier. It certainly wouldn't hurt anything.



general advice:



Don't be afraid to use speed 5 and/or 6. You won't get any polishing done on low speeds.

Make sure the SSR2 is allowed to turn clear, signaling that it's broken down.

Move the PC slooooooooooow, around 1/2 to 1" per second. It takes time to remove swirls/scratches.

and yes i plan to wake up at 7am and work allllll day on it, ive worked on it for 13 hours straigt by hand before so im kinda excited about using a pc finally. thx again guys keep he advice comin for a first timer.





hey does anyone know anything about langka? ive got a few spots that could use some touch up, not for a while but id like to try it out the NEXT time i do a full job on it.
 
yeah that process is fine, but keep in mind that it's generally recommended to wait 24hrs between layers of sealants or waxes. If you really want to put 2 layers of each on, I'd at least wait 30 min or something between layers, though longer would be better.
 
Supposedly the polymers will not have had adequate time to "set up", and thus have a negative effect on the durability. It could also affect the resistance of the polymers to the solvents of subsequent layers.
 
I would stretch the detail out over two days just to give the sealants time to cure. I would wash, clay, rmg, and one coat of ex the morning of the first day. Then that evening put on another layer of ex. The next morning put on a layer of NB. and then that evening put on another layer of NB. That gives a few hours in between layers so that things can set up.
 
I agree, but if you're going to allow several hours between products, I'd use a California/OXO duster or a QD to remove dust from the paint before applying a new coat.
 
well, that I was kinda assuming they he knew that your not supposed to apply products over a dusty surface :D out of those two choices, I'd go the QDing route. My CCD has left very fine scratches from removing dust. QDing gives you a bit of lubrication to prevent this.
 
Hmm guess i was getin greedy with the double layer, ill double it up the next time i do it when i have more time but saturday i got a car to detail and then i gotta work sat night so no time to clean it saturday. i guess i could do the sealant mid day and then wait about 2-3 hours to do the wax. good time for food and doin the inside =)

btw the pc itself came with this white pad sepearte from tropicare, its whit but it looks ******. Any thoughts or did any1 elses come with a crappy white pad?
 
yes, they all come with that crappy white pad with permanent backing plate attached. It's a piece of crap, but you can tear it into pieces that become useful for little things like headlight polishing. :)
 
when a friend of mine got a PC last weekend I stole his "stock" pad and cut it up into 2 foam tire dressing applicators! We then proceeded to attach the remanants of the pad to his PC, douse it in wd40, turn the machine on @ speed 1, and set the pad on fire. flaming chunks of crappy pad went everywhere, it was cool though :D.



as for using the PC, move it slowly, overlap your passes to ensure adequate coverage, and don't be afraid to push it to speed 6 when polishing!

nah, we did this in the middle of the road with no cars driving past and both of our cars were up in front of the house in the driveway.



and about homemade napalm, try condensing an entire box of shipping foam pellets into an ounce and a half of gasoline. that stuff will burn for a good hour.

I got to work with the PC on a Miata this afternoon. Just went after the rocker panels.



I have a new found respect for anyone who does this for a living....minus a lift. Fun certainaly didn't enter into the equation...the pad was filthy, I am aching but the panels look much better.
