optimum no rinse spotting with masterblaster "blow dryer"

I have my car fully opticoated (fresh, too).  Living in an apartment-like complex in a carport (in Cali), I can't easily hose down the car and I am trying to be water conscious given the drought.  What I was doing originally was 2 bucketing with optimum no rinse and then toweling it dry with high quality microfibers.  However, I felt that the drying part was leaving a little bit of marring when trying to dry the car.  


 


So, I thought I'd give ONR a shot with the MasterBlaster (dual motor).  I am very active about getting the MasterBlaster out and immediately drying off a section.  I use it to push the water off of the car and if there's anything left that I can see, I gently dab it with a microfiber.  Despite this, I am seeing a lot of heavy spotting on the car after the dry.  Those spots wipe right off with a towel, but I am trying to avoid doing that otherwise it defeats the purpose of the MasterBlaster.  I am wondering if I am using too much ONR in my mix (leaves a lot of residue?), or if this is just going to be a result of the MasterBlaster.  I am thinking about trying a lighter solution between ONR/water.  Does anyone else use this wash/dry combo?  I've also looked in to the whole filtration system, but I haven't "gotten there yet" in my quest for a great wash.  I suspect it's the ONR being "air dried", however, and not so much the water.  I could be wrong, though.

You said you're 2 bucketing with ONR....how exactly are you washing the car and how much ONR are you using in your water?
 
I put 4 ONR "caps" worth of solution in to the water.  I need to measure out how much that is when I get home...
 
It is my experience that need to be buffed / dried off with a towel. The solution doesn't blow off well without leaving spots.
 
hmmmm, that's unfortunate.  I wonder if I should nix ONR or nix blow drying.  I've really liked ONR but I really want the no touch method of drying
 
Are you drying the panel before continuing on the next panel?


 


Have you tried using a spray wax or a quick detailer as drying aid?


 


When were you drying with MF towels, were they damp? I find damp MF towels or damp waffleweave towels for drying is more effective compared to dried towels. Water absorption is increased and you have lubrication when you are wiping

I haven't tried anything else as a drying aid, and I do dry before moving on to the next panel.

If you mar your paint with those towels, its all on you. 


 


Thanks for the suggestion!  After just spending $300 on the MasterBlaster, I may try to stick with using it but find a different wash method.  I do like the idea of a no-touch dry, but those towels do look good.  I guess it still comes down to: do I change my wash method, or do I change my dry method...
 
If you are using standard tap water to mix with the ONR it could be the minerals in the water are what is actually leaving the spots.   Have you tried using a couple of gallons of distilled water as your mix with ONR and in your second bucket??  I've never understood the 2 bucket method with ONR.

Don't give up yet. I would try Ultima WW+ concentrate. Like all conc you can mix for ww, rw, clay lube or detailer. I used ONR for many years but after trying Ultima's WW pre-mixed solution this year I converted over. Still use ONR during the winter months but never used a blower to dry my cars.


 


Maybe someone in CA can send you an ounce or 2 to try.
 
Thanks for all the feedback!  I guess I was going with two bucket for ONR since the towel is dirty as heck after wiping down a panel or two.  Honestly, I just go to a different microfiber now and maybe rinse one some times.


 


jmsc:  just ordered some Ultima WW+ to see how that works out with blow drying.  I decided to do a bit of reading on it and there seem to be a lot of happy ONR and Ultima WW+ customers.  I'll report back with what I find...
 
If you are marring the paint with the drying process, to me that means there is a good chance the first pass may not have cleaned everything off the paint which is common for me if I let my car get too dirty.  If you are drying the paint with dirt still on it, you are grinding that dirt into the paint most likely causing marring.  If I let me car get too dirty it is not uncommon at all for one pass not to do the job and need to hit with a second pass.


 


For the second pass, I take my dirty wash media (generally a microfiber wrapped sponge), dump it in my rinse bucket rubbing it on the Grit Guard to release the dirt, wring out to water from the rinse bucket, dump it in the ONR solution bucket and hit that same spot again.  Now, if you are using the method of using numerous microfiber towels in your solution, instead of cleaning off your wash media in the rinse buck you can simply unfold the microfiber towel to a clean spot or grab a clean one in the solution bucket.


 


A few other pointers.  If my car is really dirty, before I every apply the wash media, I may spray down the car with wash solution from a spray bottle.  This gives ONR a chance to start its work before you event start wiping which can help.  By doing so, the paint will already be lubricated and the dirt will already have absorbed some ONR.  This further helps remain marring free.
