Optimum Gloss Coat New Formula

I coated my car with Gloss Coat around year ago. I went to Autogeek to purchase some more and noticed they have a "new" formula. I assume this is an improved formula that i want to purchase? Assuming so, do i need to take off the coat i put on last or just go over the top of the old?

You can safely clean and prep the paint for adding another coat of Gloss Coat (has been done by many on these forums).

Yeah, it`s been a year so i just want to add more protection.

Then there is no need to reapply. Gloss coat is still on the paint. The newest formula is technically a 3 year coating.

Get yourself some ironx or ferrex and start with a decon wash. I did the same thing with my dad`s car at 5 months that has gloss coat.

Here are the steps that I did:

1. Spray ferrex onto the paint while it is dry and dirty.

2. Rinse. Have your bucket(s) and soap already mixed to avoid water spots from previously rinsing off the iron remover.

3. In a bucket I mixed my car wash soap at the proper dilution ratio and added 2 ounces of all purpose cleaner. Now I have a foam gun but it is not required. I also mixed some car wash soap and APC in the foam gun as well.

4. Proceed with your normal wash

5. Evaluate the paint to see how smooth it is. If you believe it needs to be clayed then you can proceed with this method to clay gloss coat without damaging the coating.

6. If you do not believe it needs to be clayed you could either leave it as is or get yourself some opti-seal and use that give the surface some additional protection and gloss. You could use Opti-Seal as a drying aid through the year if you wish to.

Gloss Coat needs a clean surface to bond to the paint like most coatings. It`s not like a wax or sealant where you can re-apply at any given moment. If you polish you will remove the previous application of gloss coat. If you have defects and want to touch those up then you will have to reapply in those areas that are polished.

Theres numerous coating booster type products you could top it with. Pinnacle black label makes one that I use and like. PA makes a couple of SiO2 spray products. There`s Reload too, but people haven`t had very good experiences with it. There`s plenty of other options, too. I think these are more along the lines of what you`re looking for, rather than a full on reapplication of Gloss Coat.

I guess I didn`t realize it would actually last that long? How can you tell if you actually have coating on your car, it doesn`t really bead but it never did. Just out of curiosity, what happens if you apply another coat of Gloss Coat, will it not adhere?

What type of car wash soap are you using? Some will give the appearance of a product not beading or sheeting well because they leave something behind (wax or gloss enhancers).

Try the decon wash that I mentioned to get a majority of the above surface contaminants that are sitting on the coating. Make that your starting point. I posted photos in the link I posted of the process I did.

If you apply another coat on top of it, it will probably adhere but it won`t last long as their are contaminants sitting on the coating. If you really want to apply another coat then I would go ahead and re-polish, prep and re-coat. Essentially starting over.

You could use opti-seal as a maintenace product to add gloss and slickness. It beads well but it is more of a sheeting type product.

I usually use Optimum`s car wash, I`ll sometimes use Griots. I`ll look into the decon wash and either start over or maybe try opti seal.

Optimum car wash tends to leave a hint of polymers over time. Not sure about Griot`s. Report back after a decon wash. Junk accumulates onto the paint over time. Detail sprays and spray waxes will clog the pores of a coating.

I just posted beading photos after I did a decon wash on my dad`s car with gloss coat. All I use on it is ONR and at times will follow up with optimum`s instant detailer.

I`m on my phone so it`s easier to post the link that photos. This is the beading I am seeing at 5 1/2 months.

Beading on coatings usually isn`t as good as beading you`d get with a wax. With that said the Coating does excel at Sheeting (water running off the panels) which is what helps keep the car cleaner than when you use a wax. I`d start with a good decon like The Guz suggested and see how the Coating is performing. For Reference on how long the coating can last just look at Vega`s thread from when he had it on his Sable: Final Update On Optimum Gloss-Coat

Thanks for the help guys. I`ll try the decon next week. Also, what happens if you try putting a carnauba topper on top of the gloss coat, does it provide any protection or does it not really adhere with the contaminents on it as well as the gloss coat?

It may attract more dust with a wax over it. It may not last long either due to the self cleaning effect of gloss coat.

How is gloss coat at marring resistance compared to other well known coatings like CquartZ

I am most shocked that you say you never had much water beading. I did gloss coat on my Grand Cherokee 12 months ago and it beads like crazy now and it did then too. Not just normal I waxed my car beading, but rather rather stands up a 1/4" everywhere. If I drive with water on the car it blows off as if it just doesn`t want to be on the paint. I have done three cars all brand new and everyone has the most insane beading of water I have ever seen before.
