I just detailed my sister's black Lexus GX470 this past Thursday and Friday. Yes, it took me two days to do and I still didn't completely finish it yet. Her car is fairly new (about 1 year old), so I really didn't feel the need to clay the car. It is also always garaged. Under a 1500 watt halogen lamp though, the swirls were pretty bad.

What I used to tackle the swirls were 3M's Perfect It II, Menzerna Intensive Polish and Menzerna Final Polish. I started with the Intensive Polish first and found that it just wasn't strong enough for the job. I eventually ended up using the 3M with a yellow cutting pad on the PC, which even that required several passes to completely eliminate the scratches. At first I got a little nervous after seeing the very fine microscratches (hazing) that the 3M left behind, but after I followed up with the Menzerna Final Polish it got rid of them completely. I also had to make a few passes with this product also. After virtually all the scratches were eliminated, I proceeded to use Klasse SG as my LSP. I was going to apply the AIO before the SG, but it was getting late so I decided to skip that step.

My question is... what difference would it make if I were to have applied the AIO? My understanding is that the purposed of AIO is to clean and also to protect (minimally) the finish. Is it really necessary after using the other polishes?

Also, this coming Thursday I will be doing my brother in law's black Porsche 911. Me and him are just about as equally picky with our cars. He doesn't like anybody to touch his car, which is why he had me do my sister's car before I even stepped foot near his. He was a little skeptical about my abilities, so he wanted to see how her car would turn out before I would be allowed to do his. He was extremely impressed with the results on her car and now can hardly wait for me to do his.

He basically has the same problem that my sister's car had and the car is only a few months old. I want to try some different products this time around. I felt that it took just a bit too long to achieve the results on the Lexus. Can anyone recommend what products I should go with? Or should I just stick to what I was using?

Thanks for your help.

Can't help you with the second question, but with the first I would say that AIO is not necessary. The FPII should have done everything you wanted out of AIO except protect. When you want to start anew, however, instead of polishing the whole car with FPII just use AIO by hand.

I have just read that SG is very picky about what it bonds to, and I think AIO ensures that your base coat is one that SG will be happy with. The two were designed to work together so...

Check out this product selection chart. Notice where the 3M Perfect It II falls into the medium cut category. You can get products with more cutting power HOWEVER I would be very skeptical to do this to the whole car.

As learned here, always use the least abrasive polish necessary. You found a process that you are comfortable with which gave you desired results so why change it?

I would try the same method on the Porchse although it would probably be best to apply the Klasse twins together.

Good luck man!

-edit- Oh an yes, use the clay. It will only improve the results. Post pictures when complete as they are worth... yeah you know the rest ;)

I will definitely post pics when I am done. The car that I will be doing literally sits in the garage all day. It is very rarely driven. I don't think it even has 1500 miles on it yet. I can't figure out how it got all the swirls on it during that time though. Under normal lighting or even sunlight it doesn't look bad at all, but under the halogen lamp its a whole different story. I will make sure to post pics of the before and after pics with the halogen lamp shining on the car.

I'm thinking of ordering the SSR line from Poorboys to see how I like it. I kinda like the idea of trying out different product lines.
