Old red paint turning pink, help! *pics*

Hey guys. I'm new to the forum and would first like to say hello. I have a little bit of an issue. I own a 1991 Honda CRX. It's red, and one area is fading pink. I'd really like to get this car shining again, if possible.

The paint really isn't too bad at all, considering it's age. I wash/wax my cars religiously, but just picked this up back in August the way it is. The car has been garaged for a couple of months, so please excuse the dirt. It needs a wash.

It's finally starting to get nice out and I really want to give it the best.

Here are some horrible pictures of the fade. I'm really sorry about the quality, it's dark in my garage and I was trying to hold a bad digicam and flourescent light at the same time. The light makes it look a little bit worse than it is ;)

This is the only part of the car that's fading. Like I said, the paint isn't too bad at all. Here are some shots from back in September when I did the car using:

Clay Magic Clay Bar

Meguiars Deep Crystal Step 1 Paint Cleaner

Meguiars Deep Crystal Step 2 Polish

Nu Finish Wax

Just regular over the counter products.

Of course those are full body shots, so no detail is shown but the paint isn't too bad.

If anyone could recommend a list of products I could use to get this car looking it's best, i'd really appreciate it. I've picked up a bottle of NXT wax because I heard so many great things about it, but I don't need to use it. I don't have a buffer. I was told to get one because i'll never achieve a shine by hand like I would using a buffer. Is this true?

If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it. I'm trying to do as much research as possible. I'm willing to buy products online and do whatever it takes to get this car shining again, but keep in mind that I'm on a budget. If I could avoid buying the buffer, that would really help.

Any and all help would be very much appreciated. Sorry about the long post.

Thanks,

Nick

Nick,

Looks like you got good results with the routine you used in September. I do the same thing, but replace the NuFinish with NXT.

Let us know how the CRX come out.

I saw a post where Jngrbrdman once did a truck that was all pink like that. He used Klasse AIO with a PC and polishing pad and the shine came right back. I would wash, clay, AIO, polish if needed, then sealant/wax.

Get some meguiars medallion premium paint cleaner, I have had great results bringing out oxidized vehicles with this polish, and you can get it locally for like 10 bucks.

hondaguy2582,

I agree MPPC is great from removing oxzidation, but I've never found it locally.

Have you seen it at a national chain?

Personally, id prolly go with clay, then klasse AIO, never used the stuff, but from what ive seen it works insanely well. If not that, then the Medalian paint cleaner should work well too. I then like to use some #9 swirl remover (if its got swirls or spiderwebbing) then go over thant with some #81 hand polish then, i personally like #16 and #26, but NXT should work great too. Good luck.

Oh yeah, it might be just me, but i despise NuFinish with a passion. On every car ive used it one (prolly half a dozen, coupla hondas, moms van, friends cavalier and some others) it left really nasty greasy swirls. You could see them even when it was cloudy out. Got so pissed that i got out the buffer to try and get em out, and it only dulled the swirl. I hate the stuff, go with some NXT or #16 or #26. Beats NuFinish by a mile, and that once a year they advertise it as, is complete crap. Good luck.

I have a 1991 Red MR2 and I have been delighted with this Meguiar's mix.

Gold Class Wash

Clay

MPPC

#7

NXT

topped with #26

The key is the #7. It puts oils back into the dried out paint and brings back the color and shine.

I have had red paint fading problems on my 94 jetta and have used a very good product named "IBIZ"which brought the paint back to life. By the way, I love your black wheels and would like to find a set for my jetta. Could you give me some info Please.

Thankyou.

Hey, nice car. I have a 1990 myself (black).

I'd suggest that you just take one of the products you already have and start rubbing. I'd pick either Meguiars Deep Crystal Step 1 Paint Cleaner or NuFinish (has pretty strong cleaners in it) to start with. If you work an area for long enough, you really should be able to see significant improvement.

Thanks a lot guys, I really appreciate the help! Now i'm torn between Klasse and MMPC.

When you guys refer to #'s, are those Meguiars products?

Can I apply everything by hand, or should I get a buffer?

CRXSi90: Thanks man. Black is my fav. on CRXs besides Celestial Blue. I tried the products I have, but they didn't help with the fade at all for some reason.

eShine: That difference is incredible! I'm almost sold on that product. :bow

ddot: They were Rota Slipstream wheels. Prettty common in the Honda/Acura world. Unfortunately I sold them and miss them :o

jfelbab: Nice shine! Always loved the MR2....one day :P

Yes.

MPPC, #7, NXT and #26 can be applied by either hand or PC. I'd really suggest you budget for a PC as it lasts a lifetime and saves countless hours. It also gives better results than by hand.

:o Thanks.

does anyone know what kind off wheels are on Goldfingis 1990

CRX ?

Rota Slipstream.

Thanks for the help Jfelbab. What does PC stand for again? Porter Cable? Sorry, I forget. This is going to sound stupid, but I'm not 100% sure how to use the buffer. Not sure what the best technique is. I should read up on that as well.

Yes, I was referring to a Porter-Cable orbital buffer. There are several sources for instructions on it's use. autoipia has some good links. It is not difficult to learn and is very safe on paint finishes. If you have a fast internet connection there is a good video on the meguiars.com web site as well.

They are relatively expensive but when you consider that they save so much time and give breathtaking results it becomes a "must have" IMHO.

Thank you sir. I will check out that video. I noticed there are a couple of different models. Which should I go with?

Thanks again!:up

The 7224 and the 7336SP are identical polishers. The 7336SP comes with a polishing pad that IMHO is worthless.

Meguiar's sells it under their brand with their labels on it. (G100A) They are more expensive than some other places but they offer it with a lifetime no questions asked warranty. They also provide it with the velcro backing plate and their 6.5" W8006 polishing pad which you would need to purchase separately at most other places.

Damn they're pretty expensive. This site sells the kit for $179. I'm going to need the velcro backing and 3 pads (Klasse, Polish, NXT).

Is it REALLY worth it? Maybe I should just bite the bullet and get it. It would be nice to spend the $ to get my car running 100% first though ;)

Yes, IMO they are REALLY worth it. I'd unequivocally state that this is the best detailing tool I've ever purchased. I bought mine in 1995 and never regretted my decision for a second. I think most PC owners would state something similar.

I should really just order it and get it over with :o

Damn $50 for these microfiber towels! This is getting really expensive :o
