oil change

You guys been talking so much about mobil 1, i decided to try it. usually i go to Lube Express to get my oil changed every 2k miles w/castrol 5w-20 but no more. I saw that my oil pan's bottom had oil film on it. I park indoors and there was no oil drops on the garage floor, it was just that they didin't tighten the drain plug properly(this happens when u dont torque it). i now change my own oil and promised never to be so lazy. So i changed it to mobil one wow:bow . I notice a difference, smoother shifts and the engine idles smoother. i am changing to mobil 1 tranny fluid soooon.:xyxthumbs







ps, besides the shop rag under the filter, is there a better way to catch the oil from the oil filter from coming out because of course mine is pointing upward.:nixweiss

I use an extractor to change my oil, one of the better devices I've ever bought. One way I minimize seepage from the oil filter (89 Caddy Deville and at one time, on my 93 Maxima, both have filters pointing up) is to place plenty of rags ( like you are doing) first and then quickly bag the filter in a plastic sandwich bag as soon as you can turn it off by hand, has helped me a lot

Someone showed me a trick once that I have since adopted and that is to pierce the oil filter housing with a drill and completely drain the oil canister before attempting to remove it...no more spills or mess! It takes a little extra time but if I do not do this on one of our cars, a huge mess results.

those are both very good ideas.:up i do plan on getting an extractor, but being that i still have to get under my car to pull the oil filter, i will continue to drain the oil through the oil pan. however, i cant wait to get my extractor:bounce







what do u guys think of using a non sparking punch, and use that to tap a hole in the oil filter....would that work, i still have my old oil filter so maybe i will see how much pressure i have to use to punch a small hole

Try it. I have and didn't find much success. The filter canister tends to flex too much and I had a terrible time making a hole. The canister was just too soft or the hole ended up being so tiny that it took an hour to drain.

Thats a really good idea about piercing the filter with a drill first. I could try it and use my extractor to suck out the oil. I can give it a try even though I hardly have any spilling issues when changing my filter
