Eh, even with the additional info I just don't know those vehicles well enough to be helpful (they've changed a lot since I had my WRX). Whatever caused it, does it bug you enough to have paintwork done?
 
Today is an overcast day and I sort of notice when you look directly at the rear from behind the bumper seems very cloudy in the middle compared to the trunk. But if you look at an angle it appears to be very shiny and the reflections are much clearer. Very deceiving I must say.
