Oh yeah, the finished product:

.

The paint is absolutely flat! :bow

Yeah, it has a clear coat. I don't know how many steps, but it is a lot, and the paint is rubbed out between each coat.

What's missing = orange peel. I wish I could say the same for my bimmer. Putting all that hard work into the finish only to see that it makes the orange peel stick out even more is really depressing. However, I fully appreciate the effort that goes into rubbing out each layer of paint and understand that it's only done for high end cars. I do some case modding and I've been trying to get a mirror finish on the painted top panel. Very tedious work but the results will be worth it.

Here's a quote from a 2002 Bentley Arnage Red Label Brochure:

"As you move around the Arnage, reflections from the paintwork promote these details, and create a sense of movement. To achieve the 'mirror' paint finish requires rigorous inspection and preparation. Every motor car is carefully examined in a room bathed in bright light to identify any inconsistencies in the panelwork, before the body is sanded and polished by hand. Then, multiple layers of paint and lacquer are applied in a controlled atmosphere free from dust particles and other airborne impurities, before a final polish that takes up to 10 hours. The paint finish which results is spectacular in its clarity and lack of texture. "

Also mentioned in the Exterior Specifications:

'Mirror finish' paintwork.

Paint range of 27 colours plus personal specification facility.

Flexibilised polymer clearcoat.

On another message board detailer working for a Bentley dealer stated 31 layer of hand rubbed paint. Paint is supposedly very hard.

Scott as usuall excellent work

Eric

Yeah I was thinking the same thing this weekend. My "perfect" Porsche paint is NOTHING like a mirror with all the orange peel effect.

I'd definitely like to see a Bentley just to see paint done right.

yea bentley does all that stuff to "pamper" the finish at the factory, then the $8 an hour wash boy will just go and swirl it all up making it look like any other car :(

Woo hooo!! Nice!

I have to admit... I kind of like the orange peel effect on my Jeep... gives it texture. Granted, if I saw my Jeep with a paint job like that I would probably hate the way it looks now.

As long as you love the way your car looks, that's all that matters! :xyxthumbs

Having colorsanded quite a few show vehicles over the years ( and not ~22 coats!) , you get to realize why it's only done to ultra-expensive cars such as this; it's VERY time consuming and labor intensive work. The results speak for themselves though. I saw one of those in Beech Mountain N.C. a couple years back, I just drooled.

But like AlBoston says, any feckless person in the chain that cares for it can wreck it in short order just as easy as a new Cavalier.

But I also suppose if you can afford the car, you can likely afford the best detailers in the biz, and go to extremes to keep it away from the ner' do wells. :)

Since Bentleys are hand made, they aren't painted by machine rains and sprayers... most cars never go through the wetsanding stage, therefore orangepeel is a given for most machine assembled cars.

Great job scott... :) :) :)

Bump strips! It's missing bump strips. Forget the $8 wash, just the old lady in her LTD II with huge doors dinging it.

He is pretty careful where he parks it...and he does drive it. The odometer is at around 35,000 miles. He averages about 10,000 miles a year in it and he has a plethora of other vehicles to chose from, including a Lamborghini Diablo, which also has no orange peel.

Wow, that is some NICE paint! :bow :bow

At least you get meticulously finished paint for the price of a nice condo!

I guessed "orange peel" right away. Where's my cookie? :D

Rolls Royce sent me out to Santa Barbara last year for the launch of their new car. The paint was not as flat as your Bentley Picture. I wonder if their painted in different places?
