noob starting pads/compound

I was thinking about picking up a Chicago Electric rotary to try and buff out my bad swirl marks:

http://www.detailcity.com/showthread.php?t=13403

I've read here that most people recommend an additional backing pad for that one. Also, I'm confused by all the different compounds (SSR etc) and pads. What would be a good starting package with pads/compounds and how much is that likely to run with a new backing pad? I'm on a tight budget (hence the $30 CE rotary)

well the best BUY would be the edge 2000 pads even though they are more expensive your getting two pads not just one remeber that. Also of polish you can't beat Optimuim polish for the price. It a do all product that will kill the swirls. Next in line would be the pro polish from poorboys

pretty much equal but remeber if you want the larger pad it's more cash and another backing plate.

So if I go with the first backing plate, then I need to go with the first set of pads? I was a little confused by your post. Any recommendations (pros/cons) between the two plates?

Damn, that's $90 and doesn't even include polish/compound. It looks like I'm going to be into at least $150 for polisher/pads and product. That's a lot more than I was hoping ($30 for CE polisher, maybe $50 max in consumables to get me started).

ok here is the low down the first set is the EDGE 2000 set you get their adapter and you can use it on any on thier edge pads 4 inch 6i nch and 8 inch(4 inch was never brought to market but someone on DC has them and it's not me.) also they make foam and wool pads.
Pro's
Two pads in one
Double sided means you can use the top of the pad for buffing
No backing plate to catch on
No centering issues
easly goes from Rotary to PC
You can order pads with different foams(cuttting one side/polishing the other)
Cons
The adapter is long
In the PC they can wobble a little bit.
Wierd at first
These had glue issues at first but it was mainly with PC use

Velcro
Pro's
Widely used
Even paint stores carry some.

Con's
Backing plate could cause damage
If not centered could cause damage
Velcro could fail

You could go with Megs pads something like 2 polishing and a finishing and then add SSR2.5 and SSR1 and that should be around 50.

No I haven't. I was scared to get one but after reading here I have more confidence.
I have my stock hood and my wife's 95 Cherokee to practice on :) I switched to a CF hood and my stock one still has the marring/swirls that the rest of my car has. If I can get the hood looking good then the rest of the car should be fixable too.

There are so many pads/product combos that it can be daunting for a noob. I guess I need to figure out what backing pad/EDGE to get first and then go from there. If I get a 5" then I need to use 6" pads right?

Ok, my buddy at work is going to pick-up the CE buffer for me from his local HarborFreight store at the weekend.

I was thinking of going with this backing pad:

http://www.autogeek.net/5-inch-rotary-plate.html

Are these good pads to use with that?

http://www.autogeek.net/vcpad.html

What would I need? Yellow,Orange and White?

I am also unsure of which product to get. I hear a lot about the SSR2.5, I would need the SSR1 to use after that right? What about the LSP?

Can someone explain the difference between a sealer and a polish? You use the sealer first then the polish?

I'm just looking for a list of everything I will need so I can order it all at the same time. Thanks for all the help with my questions.

If you want to minimize what you spend on polishes pick up 32 oz of Optimum Polish and a bottle of Pro Polish, these two will take care of just about every problem you'll run in to. Optimum is also very user friendly and reduces the chance of burning or marring the paint because it can be worked wet forever (not forever, a very long time). Consider the edge pads an investment, they'll last you a long time If you can afford it go for the 8 inchers, they work much better on a rotary than the smaller 6 inch pads. It's definetly worth the extra $10.
