I would just clay. If the car is not that bad it won't take long to clay anyway.
I would clay. The stuff that clay will remove is stuff you don't want your PC pad rubbing into your vehicle's finish. Even if there is a minimal amount of material on the finish, it's worth claying. And, as Danase said, it wouldn't take much time in your case.
Considering where you live, think what you have driven through since your last detail. Same stuff I did. My '05 has 15K on it, and I'm going to clay when I detail on Easter weekend.

Not a bad idea...Just because your using a PC, claying is not a prerequesite. Im sure your aware of claying benefits, but its not like its mandatory. Especially if you feel its in "OK" shape. But 15000 miles is quite a bit if its never been clayed before.....

Don't clay if the paint is smooth - when your hand is in a plastic baggie.

Claying is great, but it's not always necessary. I've polished many paints with far more miles on the odometer without claying, and have never had any problems with "rubbing the stuff into the finish". If the car has been regularly washed and waxed, it probably doesn't need it. If it's been poorly maintained, then you'd do well to clay first. Do the plastic baggie test that Bence mentioned.
