Nikon D60?

ebay has the same kit for $699 (same price) from an authorized dealer. Full warranty, brand new in the box. With the 25-30% cash back, it's a no brainer.

As mentioned, always purchase from authorized dealers to guarantee warranty coverage. You can verify authorized dealers on Nikon's website.

I think people looking for DLRs over point and shoots need to realize the physics is different. The DSLR depth of field is much less than P&S so it is even more important to pay attention to what you are focusing on and f-stop being used. In side in flash conditions, with a DLSR in auto mode you will likely be disappointed since a lot will be out of focus if you are used to a point and shoot.

I never had a problem.:nixweiss In fact I've taken pictures of near 100 yards and in motion and still got an amazing picture. I tested out my d50 "mini" telephoto lens that came with it when I first got it home. I took a picture of a distant neighbor leaving his driveway and I was able to read the license plate and the detail was amazing.

You might even want to consider Ritz camera. They are having a special deal on the D60 this month and you can also get the 55-200VR zoom upgrade for cheap as a package. Plus a bag, Nikon instructional DVD's, etc... They also have classes too.

I highly reccomend them!

The D60 is a great model but keep in mind that you might find some deals on the D80 as well now the the D90 has been released.

Remember, the guy is a "noob-to-photography", so please, don't tell him to buy a D80 or D90 ...

Even a D60 will be too much/too pricey in my opinion.

The D60 (or most any camera in the right hands) can take great pictures. I am just saying you need to watch the DOF. It behaves differently and noticeable in low light or flash situations.

A noob taking a pic with a D60 (or any DSLR) in anything but auto mode may not like the results compared to a point and shoot if they do not understand what the camera does. These cameras have a lot of options that if set wrong can lead to disappointing use.

The real advantage of a DSLR is taking pics in lower light where they have superior higher iso performance and optics with some lens (less issues at times at the extreme focal lengths). They do not automatically take better pics (web view or in 8x10 print sizes) that most people can tell. Those "great" shots do not happen....they are planned.

Nikon's also tend to be more neutral (this is considered better for purists) for the in camera jpg processing so out of camera they are not as saturated or more sharpening compared to Canons. You can change this in the menu's. Again, these are things noobs would need to understand.

Net, the Nikon D60 can do a lot if you invest the time to understand the options and how to exploit them. Otherwise, you have an expensive heavy point and shoot.

I got a good deal on ebay for a Canon Digital Rebel combo after thansgiving, sealed in the box with the store receipt. Since this is my first DSLR, coming from a small point and shoot Canon PowerShot SD500, this is almost techno overload, so if the person has a skill level like me, these DSLRs are a big step up from auto shoot compacts. Food for thought.

Camera's have come along way even a cheap one can do amazing things!

I just picked up a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28

The only reason was the price, $239 with free shipping B&H photo.

10.1 Megapixels

HD 720p video

Raw capture

18x optical

software included to handle it all.

I have been looking at the FZ28 too.

It has been getting good reviews (was waiting on dpreview too). Have you used the raw mode? Most reviews say it is very natural -- not oversaturated colors (like most Canons).
