well i sell cars for a living, and at a family owned dealership at that. yes im part of the family.

anyways just wondering do many of you work full time 60+ hours a week and do detailing on the side for just extra cash?

i was just thinking about doing this.

i detailed cars when i was young for my parents from like 14-19 then for a year before i went into the army. now i sell cars for a living.

just was thinking cause i can get all our cleaning supplies and stuff at cost.

if i did this i would only do it out of my home though i woudnl't do it at peoples houses or nothing.

just wondering if this is something worth thinking about or not.

detailing for me is a 40+ hour a week job....worked at a few different dealers as a detailer and in a few other industries while doing it on the side when i could....recently decided to go on my own as a career...

i would say if u know what you are doing, you already have a dealership connection, and get products cheap then go for it!...is a nice way to make a couple extra hundred dollars a week...

i cant imagine doint the salesman hours and then still going home and wanting to detail cars though..

Do it right or don't do it at all.

Get licensed, insured and take a formal auto detailing course.

Ask yourself why would somebody take a car to your house to get detailed instead of a pro-detail shop. price, location, etc...???

Sell and extra car or two if your looking for some spare money , its easier work . :buffing:

Yeah, if you want the extra money, I'd just work harder at selling more cars. If you have some unrequieted detailing energy, try applying it to your dealer prep, being that 95% of dealers don't seem to know how to wash or prep a car properly.

Mike is on the right track. Detail the cars on your lot to enthusiast level and I bet you can sell more cars and for more money. Proper detailing can add up to several hundred dollars in value to a car.

Both of these guys have the right idea. here is why. You can use a bay at your shop, you may have to sell the idea to the family, but i am sure you can do that.

You can include a bi-yearly or quarterly pricing of detail (round about pricing) in your car info package when they are sold. If the cars are good looking when they buy them they will be more apt to schedule a return visit with you.

You already have a captive client list, what you have not done is shown them via work how a true detail can make their car better than the jones next door, how it can improve it's value and shelf life.
